As above, changing the tailgate gas struts isn't too hard. More than possible to break the trim getting it off though, so have a look for a RobertDIY YouTube video on the subject, I followed that and broke nothing. Sorry, don't have a linky.

Excuse my ignorance but, what's a 'valve stem'?

Martin, i will try that when its dry out side and see if that fixes the problem with the timing error, as its is starting first time every time now, ever since i put a hole bottle of Redex in half a tank.
Gas struts are easy, already got the plastic trim off just need to get replacements, looks like they have been replaced before with volvo ones, seen after markets ones for £15 a pair no idea what volvo ones are but if there are dubble that i will be going after market. first thing i want to sort is the rack, when its dryish out side i will take a look for this ajustment and see if this will sort out the play if not then new rack it is |

Well I never!!
Thanks, obviously logical in MOT terms but, my imagination ran wild envisioning the tester spending a few days stripping down the engine to inspect the engine valve stems!! It's a wonderful world. Bob |

Afternoon , I'm an MOT tester
Bulbs = replace , Rack inner joints UNLESS they are very noticeable ignore ( see many vehicles with the same advisory year after year ) tyre valve , get it removed & replaced and on your next MOT the number of advisories should be reduced . Rack inner joints are non adjustable . You either put up with the slight knock or replace the track rods on both sides , they unscrew ( bloody tight & need special tool ) . They are not a difficult job to carry out

Both sides iner and outer track rods have been done so it must be a new rack and every thing else is done
And the play in some racks can be adjusted have done it before, normally a 10mm hex where the column meets the rack Quote:

Just being picky but the "valve stem" is the thin rod part of an inlet/exhaust valve (in the engine head) before it flares out, nowt to do with tyre valves ... as far as I know.
