They surely don’t need to access the inside of the car to do a repair? Replacement I can understand but the videos of a repair show all work taking place outside.

It is what it is though, and needs must. I have a stash of Dettol to rival Tesco, so I’m all set for any eventuality (I always do due to my OCD, I am not panic buying and stock piling LOL).

Good to hear positive tales though. Gives me more confidence.

Booked for repair at home next Monday so will report back. But I’m expecting damage to the heating elements to be present.

Repair - ah - that can probably be done from outside. I was thinking about the replacement

Had my XC60 heated screen replaced by Autoglass and then cameras recalibrated by Volvo. Autoglass did a top job.

Was that all done at the same time or did you have to book in with Volvo separately? And did you have to pay for the recalibration?

I have repaired bullseyes like that in the past, they take a little more time than ya standard chip, as for heated screens, you need to test it, do it 1st thing in the morning with ya breath, make sure AC is off....

I have had two windscreens replaced in my XC90s, both done by Autoglass mobile fitters, both superbly and quickly done. In both cases I was away from home and was not able to get the recalibration done.

Taking great care and being ready to cancel the semi-automation at any time I tested things like lane keeping, ACC and Pilot Assist and they seemed perfectly OK.

My car went in for it's service about 3 months later and I asked them to check / recalibrate the systems. I noticed absolutely no difference to the behavior of the car before or after the service with regards to these systems.

My conclusion is that provided you very carefully and in a controlled way, test the systems that use the technology in the windscreen "pod" , you may not need recalibration. Obviously if you were using the systems and were involved in an incident you could be in trouble with your insurance company if you had not had the systems checked.

A Windscreen repair is from the outside only.
Like you I have uber ocd with my car and 2 years ago had to have a new screen in my previous VW Touareg. Autoglass arrived and the technician was very understanding and reassuring. He had all the required equipment and he knew exactly what to do. I was with him throughout and he was quite happy with this. He told me how well supported he is by his employer and was a full of praise for them (unusual in a vehicle technician in my experience).
I think you need not worry - these guys fit screens all the time and have the correct equipment -the dealer may do very few and not the experience of screen fitting (most dealers contract this to Autoglass anyway).
I felt Autoglass had come a long long way in last 5-10 years.

All dealers have to have one of their technicians Trained as a Volvo winscreen fitter on the premises and they do on average at least one a week .. Volvo run a training course for glass ..

Really? My dealer sub the work out to a local company which comes and does it for them. Same for the other dealer I used in Grimsby many moons ago........

Autoglass is fine, not problems (though every screen they've fitted for me over last 10 years starts off with the wrong one .. so double check they have the correct one). They can do the recalibration as well (I always go out and drive for them).
