It's not so much worrying about economy, it's more a case of if you know roughly what you usually get, it's easier to spot if there's a situation of impending doom, whether that's a fuel leak, blocked cat or something more sinister.
Many moons ago i had a Nissan 300C (3.0 V6) which no matter how/where i drove it, returned 35mpg. When that suddenly dropped to 20mpg, at first i wasn't too worried as my use had changed radically - however when i again used it as i previously had and it still only gave 20mpg, not to mention a strong pong of petrol on the over-run, i new i had a problem. Opening the bonnet with the engine idling gave me a shower of unleaded - the fuel return line was leaking!

Only a pinhole but with two hot exhaust manifolds to choose from to ignite on, i doubt disaster would have been far away!

A new length of fuel hose not only paid for itself in the first few days but also made life safe again. [/QUOTE]

Agree with you, Dave. I keep tabs on my fuel consumption simply because it can give an early warning of problems on the way.

I didn’t realise that 700s don’t have a low fuel warning light - that’s progress!

At the moment, my 760 barely has a fuel gauge!

In a previous 740, i designed and built an LED bragraph fuel gauge, getting quite tempted to build another for this 760, got the parts and i kept a copy of the circuit diagram. Just don't know if i want that faff of doing it though.

For some obscure reason best known to the Gothenburg Trolls, Volvo took a simple fuel gauge design and complicated the bejesus out of it - most other manufacturers make do with a simple meter to register the contents.

Volvo have gone seriously overboard and the component count is considerably higher than my design for a solid state unit and that's if i count the LEDs individually instead of as 1 ten segment display!

My car is a 1995 reg 940 SE Turbo Estate with the same 2.3 litre B230FK engine.

Mine has a "fuel warning" light which comes on when the guage is pretty near the empty mark! The car has normally done around 400 miles when it comes on if I've filled the tank to the brim. The guage does seem to work pretty constantly, it is at half-way when I've done around 200 miles.

Overall, I get around 25mpg, a bit more than that on longer trips.

I am asked to advise, How Many Miles Per Tank Do You Get?
So far only:

a little over 120,000.

So it's not run in yet.

Ha Ha - I was going to suggest the same. My 940 is knocking on for 180,000 miles and the wife's V70 is coming up to 170,000 miles.

I achieve ~350-400 miles per tank in the 940 with primarily a mixture of A/B roads and duel carriageway on the way in to work. I use my car for work so if I need to go in to Bristol the MPG tumbles drastically, see: https://www.itv.com/news/westcountry...re-than-1-000/.

In contrast the wife's V70 D5 is super economical but that's for another part of the Forum.

A pretty steady 26mpg and my usual run is 4 miles in moderate non rush hour traffic and I fill up with about 350 miles, which is just above empty to totally full.

Once got 560 out of my 940 turbo saloon (B230FK at 12psi) - absolutely brimmed with 76 litres - this was on a long run to Cambridge and back from Southampton twice!

Can regularly get over 450 with my 960 estate, usually with a boot full of crap!
If I'm really sensible and slipstream coaches at 60mph, i can eke it out to about 580!

Cheers

P.S. always use shell V Power Nitro or Tesco 99
