Default Electrical Failure.

I have a 1996 940 LPT automatic with B230FK. 200,000 miles.

Went out to go to work this morning, and turned the ignition on to start and no dash lights or any other electrical items working.
Tried wiggling the ignition key and no nothing.

came back from work and battery voltage 00.09 volts. Other car, Lexus 12.58v without engine running, so suspect battery gone duff.

Lights were in the off position and don't think the interior lights were left on.

Going to replace battery tomorrow as it's 3 years old in November. If working make sure alternator is charging at 14 volts +.

Is there anything else I should replace like ignition amplifier with heat sink?

Can a battery suddenly die with no signs of failure, Used the car fine last Friday!

Any further input greatly received.

James.

Hi
The alternator can fail with an internal short so possibly worth checking before fitting new battery.

I would imagine with the battery that low there will be a short or drain somewhere, either alternator or another circuit, either left on or a short

Battery on my V70 went flat recently after great granddaughter turned on the light above rear passenger door and that fact went unnoticed. There's usually a reason for a battery going suddenly flat, has it being showing any signs of struggling to start the car recently? How long was it stood for before you found it to be flat? A further observation at under 3yrs old if the battery is in fact faulty[test it/have it tested]then is it still in warranty as you may be able to get it changed f.o.c.?

Worthwhile trying to recharge the battery with a charger. If it holds its charge, then it's obviously not the battery at fault.

Thank you both for the replies.

The car was used Friday and left unused until Tuesday morning to go to work.

There has been no signs of failure to start and has always started first turn of the key until now.

Internal short. How do I test the Alternator? case of removing and taking to get tested/rebuilt? Don't want to fit new battery if it will get damaged by the possible faulty alternator. can you get service parts to rebuild?

From memory the battery only had a 2 year warranty. Was cheap at around £50. Enduroline or something like that.

Many thanks. James.

its almost impossible for a battery to drop to that low a voltage without it being an external drain as the problem. At 0.09v, its effectively "open circuit", or soooo flat that both +ve and -ve plates are chemically identical.

I would try charging it and see what happens. Just jump-start it from the Lexus and run it for 15 minutes.

Could be one or more cell in the battery has gone duff. You could as Ash suggests, try jumping it off the Lexus, if it fires, leave the leads connected for at least 10 of those 15 minutes as an alternator won't charge a flat battery.

While it's doing its thing on the jump leads, make sure all the interior lights are off with the doors (and tailgate!) closed and the lights come on when the relevant door/tailgate is opened.
Also, you didn't leave the light switch in the sidelights position did you?

Thanks for the replies.

I'll buy some jump leads tomorrow and try starting it then. The lights were off, first thing I looked at. Not sure on anything else as no power yet to test. The clock stopped at 18.10!

We'll see if it starts tomorrow!

Has yours got a 24-hour clock?

It's a concept i find hard to believe but apparently there is more than one 610 in a day, there's one in the middle of the night - errrrr, early morning even as well!

Nope, no 24 hour clock. Don't know why I said that. Must of been thinking of the Lexus.

Got the jump leads from euro car parts not a bad price. 5 metre, 25mm squared cable for £18. Thought longer more useful.

Connected up and fired straight up. Checked inside lights and found the culprit! Boot light on, must of knocked it getting ladders/steps in/out!
Ran for 20 minutes, then disconnected the leads from the Lexus.
Battery voltage reading 13.5 volts. Switched off and voltage reading 12.4 volts. Re started and drove a circuit round the village of around 2 miles and voltage reading 13.6 volts. A bit low, expecting 14 volts plus but still charging, so probably absorbing the charge and hope the voltage will go up. Will re check in a few days after some long runs.

Thank you everyone. At the moment saved buying a battery.

James.
