Default Pilot Assist

I thought if you indicated, it would perform an overtaking manoeuvre? Mine seem to just disengage without warning when I indicate.

That’s correct. Tesla autopilot will do this, but only if you download the ‘beta testing’ software.

I suppose the car would need BLIS and the Park Pilot to be sure of what was adjacent or approaching in the next lane and these are both options.

The steer assist is indeed cancelled by the indicator, though on the latest version it starts accelerating when you do so to assist the overtake. When you cancel the indicator it also picks up the lanes again and youre back on.

PS it also runs red lights and give ways.

Like CI says.
PA/ACC does not perform an overtaking manoeuvre. Rather PA/ACC will perform what Volvo call "Overtaking assistance"

if you are approaching a vehicle with PA/ACC engaged and then indicate (right) "Overtaking Assistance" will kick in. PA will relinquish the steering back to you to allow you to move into the next lane easily. Once you have moved and stopped indicating, PA will retake control of the steering wheel to centre itself in the lane (it can actually be quite sharp to retake control, especially if you use the indicators 3-flashes )

If when you start indicating your current speed is less than the limit set on PA/ACC then OA will start accelerating. If your speed is at the speed set, then it does not.

There is more info in the manual here

It always feels to me to leave it a bit late to retake the steering control when you’re in your overtaking lane...maybe it likes playing chicken to see who corrects first!

Ive found all it takes is an indication, a slight driver steering input to adjust the line of the car and as the car approaches the new lane the PA takes over and steers to the centre of the lane. All pretty smooth.

It’s never going to be a Tesla - did you really expect that??

Isn't the answer in the word assist. It's not auto pilot.

In this instance, to complete the overtaking, one can perform a temporary increase in speed by depressing the accelerator pedal. This temporary increase in speed wouldn’t effect the stored speed and the car will return back to the last stored speed as soon as the accelerator pedal is released as long as the temporary higher speed than the stored speed isn’t maintained for longer than one minute; otherwise the ACC is deactivated and enters into standby mode.

In ACC I have found it useful to do some manual intervention. For example if the car in front is turning off it takes an age for the car to accelerate when the car in front has gone out sight of the radar. In this situation I manually accelerate with ACC still on. I also do this if traffic lights are coming up and I want to be a bit closer to the car in front. When you take your foot off it returns to the normal parameters.
