58 185 D5 Manual. Just back from towing the caravan to Normandy via Dover. Round trip at 65-65mph gave me around 26ish. These cars can pull. I could have easy done 70mph+ towing an 8mtr caravan... an Adria, so its one of the heaviest on the road.

It was super on the trip though, couldn't have done without the aircon, temp actually read 39 on Sunday!!
I have an 09 and mine is bang on 32mpg for the last three fuel ups (my calculation) but usually says 35mpg on the OBC, so that sounds pretty good to me. I towed my caravan with it for the first time the other day, only a short trip, but my mpg was barely affected, which surprised me. I've noticed mine tends to use the engine to brake on long downhill slopes so I switch to geartronic and change up when that happens and it can make a slight difference.

We have also just got back from a 1000mile caravan trip with the 163hp xc90, 3 kids, 3 bikes on roof and a fully load big Bailey caravan weighing around 1750kg, the car averaged 22mpg, bit shocked but some of the hills on the south coast, Cornwall and Somerset were fairly big!

Bought my XC90 last June, have a 5 seater runaround for the town, xc90 for when I need to go with 5 people. Most driving is between hampshire and london area. so mostly motorways. The average MPG shows as 34MPG.

I wanted to buy a 2015 XC90 as they say its 45MPG but Honest John states real world MPG on new XC90 is 34MPG also. I'm a bit confused here. Don't want to shell out £30k+ to still be in the same but nicer looking boat

Don't be confused - I too get around 32-34 in all conditions; never too hard on the pedal but let's just say I keep up with the traffic!

I have said elsewhere prefer the Mk1 as stronger engine (Penta used in marine applications) and whilst there are some known weaknesses, the trade now has experience and easier and therefore less expensive to maintain. Not sure about the new model - let's see.

I also am wary of the electric vehicles as the real life crash test is still to be done, although Tesla is working on this as has had a couple set on fire in real accidents! A relative of mine does crash testing for a living and due to heath and safety are unable to do same crash tests on a battery chassis powered car due to danger of chemicals - need I say more!!

Jeepers!

I have heard of petrol powered cars catching on power and exploding in accidents, better stay clear of them!**

Oh and diesel powered cars also catch on fire. Stay well clear of them too!

And planes crash too... don't go near them

And trains derail... or crash...

Need I say more?

**Disclaimer: I have actually survived a petrol powered car catching fire whilst I was driving it.

Hi,
Our 2007 185 auto averages about 36 MPG on long journeys 60-80 mph,
around town 26MPG, pretty good here in Romania, we had a Subaru Forester XT 2.5 turbo before and the XC is precious, drinking half but damn, that Subaru was a very fast car.

Diesels have a silly high auto ignition temp (and you could hold a match against it or lighter and it would not go up). Jet fuel is kerosene which is the same (plus all the lines are innerted with nitrogen).

I do think that self oxidising battery’s and petrol is a lethal combination and that as they become common this will be one of their many limitations.

I will keep my diesel for now!
