So the conclusion is: yes you can mount a boot mounted rack if you are very careful, but don't put any load on the top edge of the boot. Personally I would never risk it, but it is possible.

I agree, its not the best solution. Also, last car it marked the paint like a fine abrasive when dirty water crept between the paint and the foamy pads! Not what i want to happen again...
Investigating the tow bar carrier option at present :-)

If going for towbar, then the Thule G5 or G6 are the best on the market.
They are expensive, but hold their value and compared with the price of their cargo still a bargain :-)
