Yes Dave, I'd go for either of those brands and not worry.
The interval is as i found on the longest one Kev, with several coflicting opinions and no direct experience of the D24, i'd go for the lowest one i found (48k/4 years) as a rule of thumb to be on the safe side.

Intersting that VAG don't seem to publish the information either.

I do remember some 6-pot Volvo diesels powering generators and if memory serves, the interval on those was 1200 hours - roughly equivalent to 48k miles @ 40mph.

Surpriingly, 1200 hours can be as little as 7 weeks so they weren't a popular engine from a service point of view, either for the engineers or the customers.
