Default 440 1.9 td keeps cutting out

I've bought myself a N reg 440 1.9 td, after 13 days the cambelt snapped. I decided it would be cheaper to buy a 2nd hand engine and did so. This has caused no end of problems and i regret having not fixed mine.

At first the car would start but had no throttle, you could see the mechanism moving but there was no throttle response. The engine would rev by itself as it pleased.
I was advised to put my old fuel pump onto the new engine and did so. This has given me throttle but now the car keeps cutting out.

If i start it and leave it running, it will cut out. If i give the car and revs, it will cut out.
The mechanic noted that there were quite a few things on my pump which were loose and that he has then tightened, and he has also replaced the seals as it sounded like it was sucking in air.

All of the symptoms are screaming fuel starvation to me but i cant find the fault. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? any help will be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Craig
