That sentence sums up my thoughts on these systems. I think you have to have implicit faith in this technology and that it will react to the situation, or drive the car as you always have before these driver aids started to become the norm. To my mind if you are always wondering if this technology is going to work it makes the driving task more stressful.

Until Volvo remove their disclaimer, and we go fully autonomous, and I’m reduced to pilot monitoring I prefer to be the keeper of my own destiny.

Pilot assist/Driver support or what ever you want to call it, all switched off in my car. The most crucial part in any car is the nut that holds the steering wheel. Drive the car, don't let the car drive you. Would love to see the insurance claim form, " I hit the car in the outside lane of the motorway because my BLIS/Lane assist or some other system didn't spot them, instead of me keeping an eye on the road" But then again it's only my opinion of a driver assist gizmo.

All on in my car and I wouldn’t buy a new car without them. Seeing the replies above, I believe it all comes down to the quality of the markings on the roads you are using most often. In 30.000 Kilometer I only had two minor false positives and road markings were at fault.

It depends on what kind of roads you mainly use.

On roads with poor marking, small roads with just marking in the middle or on the side, it can be a bother.

On wide roads or those with markings in the middle and the side it´s working flawless.

It took me 2 weeks to get back used to indicate lane switches, but since it´s mostly unobtrusive for me.

Just be aware that you forego a system that can save you if you get distracted. It did for me twice in 4 Years and 150.000km. Your mileage may differ

Absolutely hate it - turned off after 3 days and it can stay asleep

On my test drive the first thing I asked was how to turn it off then for Volvo I was both surprised and pleased that I could leave it permanently off.

I live rurally and lane assist is a real pain. The interesting thing is how hard it will be to switch this off on new type approved cars. I read somewhere that the new Golf 8 requires quite a few button pushes and done every time you start the engine to get the desired effect.

I always leave lane assist on and use Pilot Assist on all motorway journeys.
Doesn't mean I'm relying on it - humans are not infallible and in the year that I have had the car both of them have saved me from some awkward situations on several occasions.
Yes lane assist can be slightly annoying if you don't indicate round parked cars etc and pilot assist is not yet perfect but once you get used to them I think they're both great.

You should not be relying on it , that's the whole point ! You should be in full control of your own car at ALL times ... The function is there in case your attention wanders or you fall asleep at the wheel ..

This is the case in the new Octavia. I test drove one before buying the V60 and the Lane Assist (or whatever the SKoda name is for it) reactivates every time you get in the car. The only saving grace is that there is a button on the steering wheel to de-activate so it is 1) push button on steering wheel 2) press again to de-activate.
I didn't realise it was on and got a shock when I was going round a corner on a narrow rural road, guess I straddled the middle of the road. It felt like I'd lost traction through the front wheels, the steering completely lost any feeling and it was only after a couple of corners that I spotted the tiny orange indication on the driver's display and realised what it was. Not pleasant at all.
