Default Hissing sound and idle is high

I've just started to get the following happen all the time:
  • There is a hissing sound on the driver's side - it sounds like it's in the dash.
  • The hissing sound stops when I put my foot on the brake pedal.
  • The idle is high (1400) - it drops down intermittently and then goes back up again.

I'm not very technical, but I know a man who is

Sounds like you have a leaking brake servo or a leak in the hose from it to the inlet manifold. The air leaking in affects the idle speed.

Yes leaking brake servo is a common problem, absolute pain to change as you have to drop the whole subframe to get the servo out
