Default First major road trip of the year in the D24TIC last weekend

Hi all,
I meant to mention this before, but last weekend, after much mechanical fettling and recommissioning over the last few months, I took my diesel 940 on its first major road trip-I had a karting race meeting at Red Lodge in Suffolk, which, including trips to and from hotels etc and detours via Fareham and Fordingbridge (twice) and Sidcup en route, was a 525 mile round trip from me in the wilds of Dorset.

On the way there, the car was fully loaded from floor to ceiling with karts, tyres, engines, tools, awning and so forth (along with two people), and on the way home, in addition to that we stopped off via Sidcup in Kent to collect and bring home a large box trailer that my team mate had just purchased, along with a kart and various tools inside it.

The car drove superbly, lapped up the miles and, via a brim-to-brim calculation, returned 38.7mpg despite the massive load it was lugging! I couldn’t have been more pleased. The only issues were the downpipe to bellhousing bracket rattling a little (since sorted-the downpipe of the rather rorty custom made stainless exhaust that the PO had made for the car is slightly smaller in OD than the bracket, so I wrapped some fibre exhaust wrap (the type you’d use on a bike exhaust) around it, tightened it back up and job’s a good ‘un) and what I now know to be the DMF noise being a little louder whilst towing and fully loaded.

Still a few bits to do as always, but the car was an absolute champ. Very rewarding after all the work over the last few months!

Nice work

As soon as we were allowed to travel to Scotland a few weeks ago, I did 970 miles in 48hrs in mine.

They do lap up the miles, mine averaged over 45mpg on that run - but lighter loaded than yours! (2 people, a car load of household stuff for 200 miles, and only a few car parts for the rest)

Edit:

hi phil our cars are similar age and milage , i have averaged 40 MPG too on big runs to deepest cornwall from north staffordshire on summer holiday trips but car not fully loaded like yours and doing about 65 MPH . mine being AUTO it says in volvo book slightly better MPG which i find strange .as manuel box usually reads better MPG . so it goes to show these engines will go on and on with some TLC and bit of luck too . woud be great if you can get yours to the big V.O.C. rally sunday 11th july at uttoxeter staffordshire .
regards jim

hi TUFIF your car also living proof also of the longevity and reliability of these engines hope you can get your D24 to the rally too , usually only 2 of these D24s are at the rally but always a good turn out of 900s petrol and some 700s . so come on lads make it a good turnout !!
