Default Idle engine speed at start-up from cold

I have recently got a 2004 T6 when I start the engine from cold the management system revs the engine at what I would call and unnecessary speed for a good 2 or 3 minutes. I assume it's supposed to do this but my question is:
Is it supposed to be running so fast?
Is this speed programmable by the Volvo dealer?

Mine does exactly the same its a bit like an electronic choke it presents no problems and the revs soon drop too normal. As far as i know its perfectly normal.

Ours does the same. I just wait until it drops before putting into drive to give the gearbox a fighting chance.

Yes it is normal, to warm up the catalytic converters quickly and hence reduce emissions . As soon as you put it in D this is cut off so it doesnt jump into gear ...

It doesn't actually it keep going and I can drive off like it until it decides it warm enough. It can't be the gearbox as it a Volvo factory recon fitted 10k miles ago and I doub it would be a experiencing a problem.

It just seem to thrash the engine a bit too much. Could someone please tell me if this is adjustable via OBDII? If so I'd like to get it tweaked

Is this true for the V8 as well? My new V8 exec (about 300 miles on it so far) seems to cough gutterally when starting up in the cold, almost sounding as if it is going to stall. Then after a couple of minutes it settles down into a reassuring gentle growl. Have not asked the dealer about this, but does it sound like normal engine behavior? or new engine behavior?

Thanks,
Tom

Yes it is specifically designed to have an increased tickover on start-up, linked to engine temperature (nothing to do with auto D - at least not on my 2008 D5).
My old V70 had a similar tick-over problem in reverse - when warmed up it was prone to stalling on 1st gear take off. That had become a 'known fault' and was fixed by a software upgrade, not a dealer tweak.
