Default 1999 Volvo V70 2.5 TDi D5252T Misfire Like Symptoms

Driving along the other day and the diesel light came on. Almost immediately the car started chugging as if it was about to run out of fuel.

I stopped at a filling station and filled it up a bit, but the symptom still prevailed.

Got home, put a new fuel filter on and the car went 100%... until I let the diesel light come on shortly after (I've been really disorganised this week).

Almost immediately the car started chugging again as if it was about to run out of fuel.

On both occasions I found that the car drives ok if I drive easy, but if I put the foot down it starts to chug like it's being starved of fuel.
  1. Is this likely to be dirt in the tank causing this?
  2. Is it a coincidence that it seems to happen immediately after the diesel light comes on?
  3. Is there anything else I should be looking at?

I'd be swapping the in tank pump over if you can get hold of another one cheaply? I don't know much about the injector pumps yet, I've just bought a V70 TDI so I'm hoping to learn, as mine has an occasional hesitation that I can't reproduce or pinpoint.

Indeed, only a pickup and a rheostat to collect info for the fuel gauge.

Is is possible the end float is restricted or distorted (by clumsy hands) preventing correct reading? You should have approximately 7 litres once the lamp illuminates...circa 50 miles

Turned out to be a broken wire on the top of the 4th injector.

Reconnected it and now running perfectly.

Default What are these?

What are the two devices in the diesel tank?

One is the sender obviously. Is the other one the fuel gauge?

I might be wrong but I thought the "sender" was for the fuel guage reading ?
and the other is possibly the low level warning on the dash.

The first looks like a dummy for what would be the pump on petrol cars?

Cool

This any help? I also think one may be a dummy to block the hole, although a rather elaborate one.
Had another think. One with the pipes is the pickup and return with a space where a pump might be, the other is the level sender.
