Oil warning light

Hello

Yesterday my oil warning light came on.

I immediately went out to buy oil but then found out the oil level is fine, possibly over-filled with clean oil. The dipstick is wet about an inch above max.

What are other possible triggers for the oil warning light please? Oil pump failure?

I think it sounds rattly but that could be my imagination...

What engine? Petrol/diesel? Could be that whatever drives the oil pump has broken so the pump is laying idle as it were.Sender unit could have failed or become disconnected?

Sorry, neglected to mention 2 litre petrol auto.

Since I need the car daily I've engaged the breakdown people and probably getting recovered to a garage who advised I don't drive it.

Could the oil light be triggered by the auto trans fluid?

I've just found a dipstick for that, it's about half way between the cold and hot markers. Seems about right, the engine is still warm from my trip to work...

Auto transmission fluid won't trigger engine oil warning light.Level for trans usually measured with engine/gearbox warm but always with engine running and gearbox in either P or N.Don't know what drives the oil pump on these but that could have sheared/broken.One other thing occurs that it could as an outside possibility be the oil pick up strainer in the sump that has become blocked preventing the oil circulating.But I'm afraid unless it is something simple like the wiring broken/ detached it looks like being a strip down job to find the fault.

Thanks for the advice.

The car was really rattling when I started it at lunchtime yesterday, but sounded fine when recovery came here.

Garage is suggesting blocked intake as you suspect. If it's just a knackered filter I'll kick myself. But I could not drop the sump on my drive.

The garage has lent me a manual diesal Fiat Brava, can't complain but it's horrible 😄

Self-inflicted really as last time I changed the oil I bought the wrong filter and so didn't change it. It was quite an expensive mistake. The strainer was blocked.

StartRescue were very good for the recovery. The garage sorted it inside 24 hours so although a bit pricey, I'm back on the road.

I actually started to like the Fiat
