As an owner of an 850 TDI, I'm very keen to see your progress on this one and hopefully it can be saved.

I always love to see cars getting a second chance at living.

I have to say it looks very promising. I do like that colour too. I must profess a certain bias though since it's the same colour as my 1998 V70 Tdi. I do hope it's good news from your mechanic.

I don't know about the wing but the handbrake and exhaust are not difficult jobs. Setting the dynamic timing on the D5252 engine has been problematic until recently since few places still have the necessary software. However the 850OBD2 app for Android phone and a suitable dongle will allow you to do it yourself for an outlay of around £20. If it starts and runs well, it's probably fine.

I'm sure you'll find no shortage of encouragement and advice, whether you want it or not, from others on the forum.

Good luck.

Martin

It looks good I think......I was on the look-out for one and ended up just getting a petrol one. Rare beasts indeed these 5-pot VAG diesels.

Well my mechanic mate has been for a coffee, he had a quick look over.
Bit of a clatter from the top end, timing slightly out at a guess, sort the exhaust, adjust the hand brake re duck tape the wing it will test no problem.
So. The definate vote is to save.

One question. The rear arches are pretty crusty.
There is a phase 1 v70 at the scrappy. Can I take a body cut from a V70 to fit an 850? As in are the rear quarters the same?

Glad to hear you had a favourable report from your mechanic.

If it's an intermittent clatter it could be the vacuum pump for the brake servo. They are notorious for this. If the noise disappears when you put your foot on the brake, that's what it will most likely be.

Are you sure? In my experience the V70 arch liners do not fit the 850 - this surely suggests there is something different in there.

Its tucked away safe now until after Christmas, until then I will be collecting parts, and doing the jobs Mrs Monty wants doing.
Then I will start a build thread, may do something a little different with it. ( not a pick up)

Thanks for all your support and advice as always chaps.
