Can anyone tell me where the gearbox dipstick is? I can't seem to locate it.
Take a look at the post three above this. Later models don't have a dipstick it would seem. Very handy info as I was looking for mine and couldn't find it!

The transmission fluid for my 2013 I think is JWS33091.

Hi,

Just to clarify a few things. First you do not use JWS3309 in your box I do not believe. Call Volvo to confirm that you have AW-1.

Also the best way to do it is to dump the box fluid into a drain pan then add the equivalent volume and repeat. This is a very gentle way to do it and prevents any issues if during the gibbons method you discharge but don’t get sufficient oil in etc.

Third, simply start the car, leave 30 minutes without driving and then level the oil.

I have used this method on mine 30 thousand ago and shall do so again.

Hi guys, thought I would post an update.

I completed my gear box oil chance using the Gibbon Method and it was a very easy job.

I used the gear box oil from this link:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F303081772419

If any ones needs to confirm the correct oil for their gear box pm me your reg and I will let you know.

I can also confirm the pipe for the intercooler flush worked a treat and I ordered from here (10x15mm 3/8")

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F263932467234

I over filled the gear box by 1 ltr (help to take out any mistakes etc) then got the gear box to 60 degrees with vida then leveled off the fluid to correct level by removing the small Allen key on the bottom of the gear box (do not touch the large one!) a very nice feeling when you see pure cherry red come out of the gear box!

I then used vida to reset the gear box counter, I total I used about 18ltrs to get mine clean.

I have to admit I had no issues with my gear box but as it's now hit 100k I thought I would pull my finger out and do it.

I can't believe the difference it has made, not one single gear change can be felt, it's as smooth as anything, well worth the job and only took about 2hr etc.

If any one needs help or info let me know, I will help where I can.

Regards.

My car hits is at 99,600k so think this is due. Thanks for the update. I'm not sure on my oil so I'll pm you.

I replaced the upper and lower front engine mounts. Has improved the occasional 'thunk' I get from the engine 90% but still happens from time to time. Let's hope this solves it. Will feedback results etc.

I think it's worth mentioning that especially on the later 6-speed TF-80's - having up to date TCM software is key to longevity and smoothness as well.

(The later versions of the software have a very different adaptation map which uses different values at multiple temperature bands).

Every fibre of my being thinks changing the gearbox fluid in my 190,000 mile 62 plate XC90 D5 Executive is a good idea, however now two Volvo independents have cautioned me against this.

Both Kings of Witcham and IVS said to leave it alone, and that they often see problems start after the gearbox oil is changed.

As it stands gear changes on my XC90 remain very smooth regardless of whether the car is stone cold or has just done 100 miles at 80 mph.

If I start to see gearbox issues I'll revisit this principle of leaving alone, but in the back of my mind I'm thinking a new (reconditioned?) gearbox might be in my future if I hold onto my XC90 for the long term, who knows?

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Then just do a series of partial changes.... 3 to 4 litres at a time.

If it was the engine oil - you wouldn't think twice.

I've never seen anyone on here reporting that the oil was changed and anything other than improvements being noted.

The wider issue is people thinking it will cure a knackered box which it wont....

Sorry to ask a newbie question but why would changing the fluid cause major issues? Is it due to it being a 'shock to the system' or simply getting the level wrong?

Could it be boxes that need to have fluid changed have large miles on them and problems were just around the corner anyway?

I had mine changed last year and it made it considerably worse but as said mine was very worn.

It has just had a full rebuild and will change the oil at about 40k the gearbox place has recommended.
