XC70 D5 running a little rough after clutch change
Hello guys.
I'm kind of new to this forum but here goes; my XC70, 2010, manual, went in for a clutch change with all Volvo parts. It also had a timing belt fitted, this has been rechecked and is OK. When I got it back I had some issues: The steering doesn't snap back when I apply a little left hand down, it's fine on right hand down. Tracking has been done twice. Mechanic now suggesting the FRHS shocker top is sticking. It has the silly 4C system so I'm hoping to avoid shockers! Second and more worrying is that the engine is now a bit rough, growly, vibrating more than before. The shake can be felt, but not always, though the clutch pedal and also seen on the rev counter which has developed a kind of stammer. Strangely it seems a little bit quicker! It starts without problems. Suggestions have been made about injectors, timing, fuel delivery, flywheel and crank position sensor. I'm supposed to be driving it to France in a couple of days, it is currently having a new crank sensor fitted. Any suggestions would be great, thanks in anticipation of wisdom. Cheers Rob |

Did you fit a new flywheel with the clutch?

Hello and yes, proper Volvo DMF fitted by the local 'specialist' clutch an gearbox lot.
Is the magnet built into the flywheel or elsewhere please? |

The garage have obviously ballsed it up, it was obviously fine before it went in? So why would injectors and sensors now be at fault. To me it sounds like it hasn’t been put back together correctly. There is an awful lot to remove on the xc70 to change the clutch. I would hand it straight back to them. They need to get it back on the ramp and re check all the pipe work, make sure the prop bolted up properly and so on.

Yes, other than skipping a little when booted in 3rd it was a dream to drive.
Good news, though partial and not complete; the running has been very much improved by replacing the crankshaft position sensor. The old one had slight signs of being hit, the guess is when the flywheel went in they weren’t gentle. The engine still (I’m officially paranoid now) feels a bit more coarse but the other symptoms are gone including the stammering rev counter. So, I spent all day fettling and cleaning up mechanic muck off my cream leather! The steering will be looked at after a quick trip to Brittany. Thanks for your responses. Rob

Name and shame the garage. Shoddy work and leaving grease on upholstery is inexcusable ! Name and shame to protect others.

Morning guys.
Well, after making it to Brittany it still runs ‘growly’. Should the EMS be reset to learn that there is a new crank sensor? The steering is not the same as it was either, vague is not an adequate term. Might require a little more than naming, maybe trade body or trading standards to enforce the warranty. I’m coming to accept less from many ‘professionals’. Cheers
