Just for the record, you should refer to the side of the car in relation to sitting in it. So in the UK cars are RHD so the driver's side is the right side and the passenger side is the left side. The bonnet switch is on the right bonnet release catch. If we all use the same protocol there will be no doubt or misinterpretation.

A squirt of ACF50 (a much better product for this purpose than WD40) twice a year seems to keep it working fine. A good preventative measure if yours is OK, or (like mine) maybe a fix...

Well my XC70 is a perverse creature. When the bonnet switch seized and stopped working, leaving me with "Bonnet Open" warnings, I first sprayed it with WD40 High Performance Silicone Lubricant but that didn't make any difference. So then I contacted my local indie garage who are very accommodating and asked them if they could investigate the switch and confirm whether it was a separate unit or part of the right hand bonnet catch. In the meanwhile I put in the paperclip jumper workaround to stop the warnings and then wasn't very worried about how long it took for the garage to come back to me with any findings on the switch. I noticed that the car has also started to erratically display a "Alarm Servicing Required" warning. So after a couple of weeks I removed the jumper and reconnected the switch into circuit and when I closed the bonnet the bonnet open warning went away! WD40 Silicone has obviously very slowly found its way into the switch and freed it. However the alarm servicing warning still appears from time to time. The alarm on the other hand works as it should, as far as I can tell. I'm embarassed to tell the garage that I'd prefer to leave things alone for the time being and I'd like to use my VIDA/DiCE to investigate the alarm warning but I have yet to find the time to scramble my brains installing the software on my laptop. It has driven me mad and will probably continue to do so!

There are just two wires coming to the switch and you short out the cable not the switch so that the return from and to the ECU is made permanent simulating a closed circuit in the switch. Since the cable has the female connector it is a simple choice to insert the jumper into the two connector sockets on the cable connector.
As a footnote, the problem with the alarm servicing warnings was a red herring as far as the bonnet switch was concerned. The Volvo main dealer found that there was a siren unit fault, which is not uncommon, and replaced the siren. By the time they did it, I had lost the will to live and didn't ask for the dud unit to see if I could fix it for future use as I understand is possible with a bit of ingenuity. After all this was done and dusted I made the effort to find a way to get my VIDA/DiCE to install, so now I have a functioning bonnet switch, a functioning alarm siren and a functioning VIDA/DiCE.

2012 V70 same problem. Bonnet open message appeared on the way to Tesco. Doesn't appear to be setting the alarm off at the minute, so that's nice.
Certainly all the mechanical aspects of the mechanism are working, nothing sticky, connector and wires appear to be in good condition. Sprayed some WD in just to see what would happen. Not a lot really. Wherever the actual microswitch is, looks like a bit of a bugger to get at. Shorting might just do in the meantime. |

Put loads of penetrating fluid on it and with the cable shorted out you can happily leave the fluid to find its way into the switch. On mine it seemed to be the internals of the switch that had seized open from the bonnet not being opened for months on end. I got lucky and the fluid found its way into the inside of the switch and the contact released itself. Don't forget to insulate the centre of the paper-clip jumper to avoid inadvertent contact with the bodywork.

Interestingly Skandix list the part at only £26 or so....and then they want £60 to post to the UK. They can get stuffed !
Most other listings around the world for the new part are £$70-100 or so |
