Default 2010 XC60 Warning Messages

Hi All,

Let me first say, thanks for the add. Ive never owned a Volvo, never used a Forum...and don't normally ask for help. So here I am with my tail between my legs.

I recently bought an XC60 D5 RDesign. It has 100k on the clock and is on a 60 Plate. A few days ago I had a service done at the local garage. The day after I received this message - ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED - I took it back the garage that day and they inserted the ECU reader and wiped the code. 2 DAYS LATER....The error message has returned. Cant feel or hear any issues with the car etc. The car has still got a warranty. However the dealership I bought it form is a 100 miles away.

I intend on keeping the car for a good few years. Is it worth buying an OBD reader and if so which one is best for the XC60? Has anyone else come across this message?

Sorry if this has already been posted, I'm new to the whole forum world and I did have a scan through to see. However I couldn't find anything. Any help from you guys would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Was the local garage able to actually see what the code was ?
The Engine System Service Required message could be any number of things causing it.

Is there a pattern to how it appears ? If a fuel filter has been missed on the service or a poor quality part has been fitted harsh acceleration will cause the message due to fuel pressure issues.

Best bet is to find a Volvo indie or a helpful person on here with Vida to read the codes & determine what the issue is.

Too much oil?
As I understand it the D5 should not be filled to top of dipstick. Search for oil level in the forums. A local garage, as opposed to specialist or dealer may not realise this.

Thanks Guys,

Monkey the oil issue would make sense. I'm looking at either buying one of these for future issues -

ICarsoft VOL II VOL 2 Volvo SAAB Diagnostic Tool ECU Airbag SRS Service ABS OBD2

or....

DICE Cable with VIDA software.

Thoughts?

Thanks Andy. Notice you are in Hebburn? I'm from the Felling. Been in the midlands 27 years...Used to swim at Hebburn baths as a bairn.

Ill get the Dice cable and software then.. Just hope its not too complicated. I have a wife and a fulltime job!

Cheers

Geordie Joe,

Doing a DIY VIDA install on a laptop or tablet is not an easy thing. Much, much more complicated than just downloading an app for your smartphone. But if you do have the techy skills then by all means go for it. Or you could buy a complete working setup from a Forum member for about £200. But that will not necessarily solve your problem. VIDA is a complex app if you are not in the motor trade and have not had the training to use the system and interpret the results.

Before going down that route I would check the engine oil level to see if it is over 2/3 full on the dipstick. If it is over that level drain or suck out about 0.5 litres of oil then use the car as normal. Or get the indie garage to do it for you. After about 5 or 6 starts, if excess oil was the problem, then the message disappear. That solves about 80% of the engine management error messages on cars of that age.

I’d guess they have put to much oil in. If my memory is correct It should have 5.7 litres in instead of 6.4 the dipstick if it has one is set up for. Drain some out and the message will clear on its own after about 20 miles or so.

Of course it could be something different but local garages often over fill these.

Ah I'm the opposite I'm from Thatcham in Berkshire originally, moved up here for work & better quality of life after a divorce.

I actually work for a company based in Reading but only need to visit the office once or twice a year.

Fantastic part of the world up here to live
