Is it also recommended to clamp the flexible brake fluid hose and undo the bleed nipple before pushing the piston in (and then topping up fluid reservoir)?

You open the bleed nipple to avoid clamping the hose, in fact there's never a need to clamp a brake hose so I would never do it.

Hi - I’ve just received the pads and disks I ordered (genuine). what I don’t understand is that two of the four pads have a 3M sticky side that you can peel off - what’s that for?

Thanks

Don't know! Usually OEM Volvo pads come with instructions in the box. Any mention in those?

No reference on the instructions. Hopefully the attached instructions will be of help to others if it's legible

That is a bit odd. My guess is that the 'sticky' sided pad would press on the inside of the caliper outer bracket, and the 'normal' sided pad against the piston. You'd usually have the piston pressing against a hard surface, e.g. a bare metal backing plate.

Whoever specced those pads meant business - that VHB adhesive is powerful stuff !

Isn't that sticky stuff on the friction pad though?

You MUST use 2 axle stands , have the rear wheels hanging down..
Remember leaving the car in gear or P has no braking effect whatsoever when one wheel on the driving axle is jacked up or on soft ground ! KEEP IT SAFE !

If you are doing a front wheel drive car rear brakes the front will not be stable still able to rock back and forth a bit in gear , use 4 chocks behind and in front of the front wheels This is a general warning rather than specific . So easy to loose an arm or leg when a car falls on you with sharp backplates and discs coming down on you .

Apparently the sticky of the two pads goes on the outside of the disc according to Volvo. To reduce vibration/squel.
