Serving costs
Anybody know why a service for a 2012 XC70 (94k) cost so much? I’ve had a quote from a specialist at £470 and the one dealer (out of 4 I tried!) quote £420. What’s so exspensive that I can’t use a non-dealer, non-specialist garage for £200 plus vat?

Depends which service it is. Every other service is basic oil and filters, but inbetween there are additional items, like belts, tensioners etc.

I always use the Volvo Service Price Indicator as a starting point when I contact
Volvo dealers about a service quote. Majority of the time I can bring it down to below what the service price indicator says (they reduce the labour rates). If you have several Volvo dealerships near you, you will find that they will gladly try and match or beat a quote from their competitor. For me the Volvo Service Promise (including the European breakdown cover) is important, so that's why I don't do independents. |

I have a D5 215. 3 of the 4 dealers didn’t even get back to me, service indicator online says £250. The only dealer who got back to me quoted £420.

Ask for a breakdown / what's included, perhaps they want to change something that does not need changing? Tensioner & aux belts spring to mind

When I checked Volvo's website earlier this year, the service indicator stated £380. And that's what my local Volvo dealer quoted me. It included their 'Volvo Assist' package which I recall was break-down cover. This was a 'minor' service, so no belts/tensioners etc.
In the end I went with an indie as I wanted them to check a couple more things (and I trust them having used them previously). I recall the service part of the work was about £230. I reckon Volvo's own breakdown cover is worth £100, so the dealer's price isn't actually that bad, ignoring the fact you can do it all yourself with Volvo parts for 3 times less

Genuine Volvo heated RH mirror glass £84.00 inc VAT fitted free. ebay "cheap and cheerful" after market heated mirror glass £5.48 inc VAT and fitted myself. So even if the cheap Chinese copy fails every year, I could afford to replace it for 15 years for the price of one Volvo mirror and during that time the Volvo mirror might well fail as the original lasted 6 years which would represent a cost of around £250 to keep a working glass over 15 years. Sometimes it pays not to use Volvo, but for annual servicing I always use the Volvo dealer as he has access to and loads the latest ECU software updates and provides Volvo's rescue service FOC.
