Sheared brake bleed nipple
One of the rear bleed nipples has sheared on the 740 (I know, I should have been more careful but I was in a hurry at the time). I've tried an "eezy- out" but it feels like it will snap if I twist it any harder. Has anyone successfully removed a sheared nipple or is it new caliper time? Regards.

Depend HOW sheared it is! Have you much left of the nipple in there? You may be able to carefully drill it out and remove it (done it on an Escort) however weigh the faff around factor against time and money and see what you get. Easiouts are good however not always effective as you've found!
Cost me 20 quid for a secondhand rear caliper in working order.

I'm sure that the replacement caliper for my 740 was less than 70-80 quid from GSF but I could be wrong.
You could try drilling out the broken part and use a tap to clean up the thread but that would depend on your skill, confidence and tools/ facilities you have. Personally I hate the eazy-out type of remover as I have never been sucessful with one. Think of it this way - if a stud or whatever was so stuck in it's thread that using a spanner of the correct size shears the material, then what success are you going to get by trying the same procedure again but with a smaller diameter piece of material? What I have done when stuck for a replacement caliper (with sheared bleed nipple) is to loosen the hose at the caliper, dismount the caliper and bleed it through the loose hose joint. You need to keep the joint uppermost so the air can escape. This is a messy but effective "get out of jail free" move. It can take a while but works well if you take time and check for a "firm" pedal. HTH. |

The sheared bleed nipple should be hollow. Souse the remains in WD40 and then tap in an old screwdriver. This should jam into the nipple and the hammering (tapping) will help to loosen the nipple. Use mole grips on the screwdriver shaft to turn out the nipple.

You could try taking it to a local engineering workshop.
Maybe you can get away with giving them a drink?

Sheared Bleed Nipple
Hi I've removed several broken bleed nipples. find an extractor called "Boa" think it's Boa.co.uk or com. Unlike standard extractors these are a single unit and go down to 3mm so the nipple is no problem.
Simply put the choosen one in a drill on reverse and use drill as normal hey presto the remaining bit will remove without damaging the caliper. The units are cheaper than a machine shop doing it for you. Charlotte |

WD 40 isn't always much good in these situations - Plus Gas (a professional fluid) is better.
Haven't had a sheared nipple since I started using it - just soak in Plus gas and wrap a bit of rag around them the day before. Regards John D

technique I always use for seized bleed nipples is gingerely warming them with a blow lamp.
barely touching the bleed nipple with the flame, and continually checking with the spanner, always worked for me. |
