The 215 dimension is the width of the tyre, not the wheel. 215/40/17 215: This signifies the width of the tread pattern, in millimetres. 40: Is the percentage of the tread width dimension in the height of the tyre wall. 17: Diameter of the wheel, in inches. It could be that your alloys are wider than the Arcadias, as fitted to V Forty for Life's car, or they have a slightly different offset. What type of alloys do you have? Gary

Hi Gary. Sorry, I didn't realise that 215 only referred to the tyre (not the wheel)!
Unfortunately I don't have the wheels here with me at the moment, so there is no way of telling what the actual width is. However the ebay listing where I got the wheels described them as: BBS Alloys 4 stud PCD 114 There are close-up pics on the ebay listing, but I don't know if the listing is still active. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3208686963...#ht_500wt_1208 You might be able to make out the writing on the wheel. By the way, I guess that my V40 is a phase 2 as it was manufactured after 2000 (you've got to love wikipedia!). Meaning that it has a wider track. So, might I get away with 45 s without the need for rolling the front arches? Thanks again. |

They are 17" versions of the Crater wheel. Never seen them in that diameter before and much cheapness for them - £27 and change. On the rim, it shows dimensions of 71/2 x 17, so that gives a width of 7 1/2 inches. I think that is the same width as the Arcadia wheels. Gary

Thanks Gary. (I deliberately didn't mention the 120quid it cost me to get the 2 cracks welded up properly!!)
So, by your reckoning, I would be okay to go for 215 45 17 tyres? (without the need for rolling the arches) |

Easiest things to check are: If you have power window switches in the centre console (P1), or on the door (P2). Ashtray is in front of the gear stick (P1), or beside (opposite side of console) the handbrake (P2). Bumper fitted side markers are small (P1) or large (P2). I have attached a couple of photos of my P2, for reference. I would have thought aluminium welding would be expensive, as it is a more specialised skill. Are you refurbishing them before the tyres are fitted? - much easier to do with tyres off. Gary

Thanks for the explanation. Mine must be a phase 2 as the electric window switches are on the door, and the ashtray is next to the handbrake, as in your photos.
So, I think I'll go for the higher profile 45 tyres, and I'll take a baseball bat to it if it rubs! ;-) As for refurbishing the wheels, I know that these wheels have seen better days and are in dire need of some TLC. However, I can't really justify the expense to refurb them (around 70quid each wheel), and I don't really have the time to do it myself either unfortunately. So, I was planning on just giving them a good going over with a Karcher, and that's about it! |

I did a set of Craters recently and they seem to have turned out pretty good. Link: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=151365 Don't have to go as indepth as I did, as mine were either Hammerite painted or corroded. I promise you wont regret it. Gary

The Arcadia's are actually 7J 8 inch across,so i think you might be in trouble with your wheels and tyres.
There is about half an inch between my 225/45/17 and the front strut.

Thanks for the advice. I'll consider maybe doing a "quick" job on them, but want to avoid spending hours on each one. My wheels are showing quite a lot of oxidation (like the photo in your thread) as there's loads of flaking on the insides...
I reckon I only want to spend one afternoon max on cleaning up the wheels. So, what would you recommend (if anything) with only 1 hour per wheel?! |
