Default oil and filter change

I used to always do my own oil and filter changes until I owned an 850 glt , but without suitable ramps to raise the car and remove the undertray I started using my local garage, this carried on with my s80 , so now i own an xc can this job be done without raising the car ? if so could i have an idiots step by step , and do I need any special tools for the undertray/ drain plug/filter housing ?

You dont need to raise the car to get under it. Room is a little tight when removing the under tray but fine once its off. You will need a 36mm socket to get the oil filter out.
I always drop the oil first and while that is draining i do the filters and anything else before i replace the plug and refill the oil. You need 6.5-7 litres of oil (i can't remember the correct amount). I have been getting my oil filters from ebay where you can get 2 genuine ones for £15 and they come with new sump washers as well as a oring for the oil filter cap. The under tray is 12mm i seem to recall and the sump 17mm.

I'm sure that everyone above already knows this, but for anyone attempting this for the first time :
drive the car round the block a few times first - the oil oil drains out SO much better when it's warm :-)

Does anyone recommend using an oil flush?

Over on the V70 forum people are saying to avoid it as Volvo advises against it.

Don't forget that you only want the engine warm and not up to normal temp as you run the risk of burning yourself on both the engine and the oil. Oh and the D5 has a rear facing sump plug and the oil will travel a resanoble distance back from the sump when you first undo the plug so be ready to catch it.

I have also been told to avoid it with modern oils as they just don't need it due to the way they are made compared to old organic oils which burnt and stuck to parts of the engine.

Avoid oil flush like the plague. Regular and quality oil changes are the best bet.
Rob.
