Ok - so checked again today and the oil level is definitely on the rise. Now only 2 x marks showing.

So what does this mean?

What sort of milage and speeds you doing ?

They recon 50 mph+ for 20/30 minuits to complete a regen, if you are doing less than that it's possible regens are failing as you shut the engine off before they complete and excess diesel is getting into the sump.

I have only known my D5 to regen once, after a prolonged period of short trips while the landrover was off the road. In usual running it goes 20 miles each way at least and gets a regular run of an hour + at motorway speeds to visit the grandkids which seems to keep it clear.

Thanks for that Paul. You say you have only known it to regen once - can I ask how do you know the regen process is taking place or has taken place?

I happens to have the instantaneous mpg reading on, it suddenly dropped from 50 mpg to 35 for no reason other than it was doing a regen, I was 20 miniuts or so into a motorway run. Readings returned to expected values after about 30 miles.

Sure it would of done more just I've not been aware of them.

The excess oil issue caused by discontinued DPF regeneration should have been corrected by a software update. Have you checked what the software situation is with your car? Volvo dealers are supposed to upgrade engine software routinely free of charge when they carry our a service but if you have the car serviced by anyone else, this will not be done. I suspect that if it has not been done, you could demand that it is as it corrects a fault that can damage the engine. I was told the the software upgrade had been automatically incorporated into the set up of later cars like my 2012 D5 which should have no excess oil problems. Consequently, if your earlier D5 engine has its software upgraded, it too should no longer suffer these problems.

What Tats ^^^^^ said above....did the independent do any software upgrades ?
Getting a service done at a main dealer includes updating the software.....and includes....12 months Volvo assistance...check what it covers, so factor that in and the cost at a main dealer ain't so bad.....in my opinion......
