Rubbing tyres on full lock
While doing my alarm module replacement I discovered a few steering issues
My V70R AWD has removable/replaceable metal rubbing plates where the tyre 'may' contact the inner arch lining I have Goodyear Eagle F1 235/40R18 extra load tyres with rim protection so the tyre projects out quite a bit more than the wheel itself Both of the steel protection plates are damaged where the tires have been contacting them {see pictures) Now I already have a turning circle somewhat in excess of that of the USS Enterprise nuclear aircraft carrier SO can I get bigger (thicker) steering bump stops? {mine are black and don't appear to be excessively worn} So I can't see new parts solving this issue. OR do I just need to space out the existing stops with two or three washers underneath the bolts that fix the existing stops to the wishbone. thanks

My S60 (2007) is on the same tyre size with rim protectors and the wheels catch on full lock. The plates on the inner wings are designed (as I understand it) for the wheels to rub on on full lock. I have had to tell MoT testers before and I think there’s an exemption because the plates are fitted. The lock stops can be turned upside down and reused but it looks as if yours have been turned already.
I’d say it’s just an S60/V70 thing and you just learn to live with it. Cheers, Luke |

The plates are not expensive but factory order, so I have not as yet ordered them and of course fitted them, the nylon flanged nuts that hold them on have lost most of their thread and only two of the six (both sides) are able to be fully tightened. So it is two new plates and six new nuts needing ordered. Car waltzed through its MOT with one silly advisory, I had forgotten to wipe the bottom of the engine and gearbox and the under tray is off, I need to get a new one of those. Scrap yard time methinks.

+1 on tyres ; wheels ; rubbing on full lock. IIRC the cure was to install wheel spacers ( 10mm to 25mm) This widened the track; allowed the wheels to turn in/out more (reducing the Torrey Canyon turning circle; the bump stops still stopped wheel contact against the inner wing) At the time quality wheel spacers were north of £40/pair so I never bothered as the rubbing did not bother me that much. I discussed the spacers with my insurance company and they said upto 25mm would not effect the premium.
Also again back in the day I remember a thread concluding an under engine tray was not good for our cars as fitting significantly reduced cooling. Cheers Bob |
