Its not highly integrated and easy to add an aftermarket alarm.

There are no digital comms to anything, it just acts as a relay for the starter motor trigger, and controls the central locking, various door sensors etc. I replaced it without a diagram, just probed and traced the signals.

In this year of car (with the alarm behind the glovebox) you have a seperate immobiliser the communicates with the fuel ECU, and works from an RFID chip in the key. This will continue to work if you remove the alarm, and you can't remove or replace it without modifying the ECU. Its considered more secure than the other alarm as it can't be bypassed.

Hmmm, thinking logically about it, if an autoelectrical company fit something more modern and they have to remove that one and trace the wiring back from there, the easiest place to fit the new one is going to be in place of that one.

If they do site it somewhere else, the wiring costs to move it will probably make you cough

Not to be forgotten, if they do move it, you'll lose space from wherever they site the replacement.

It sort of comes back to a replacement fob being a good option............

These alarm parts are available from FRF in Swansea. I replaced both the alarm unit shown, together with a fob towards the end of last year.If you make anote of the numbers on top of the black box (probably 210 underneath the 'C', and 211 underneath the 'F', and the part number under the word 'Volvo'on the front), they will probably be able to track one down from the classic car parts warehouse in Sweden. Its a lot easier and cheaper than tracing the wiring diagram to fit an aftermarket system.Trust me, I tried it!!

I was thinking this exact thing today, after having looked over the wiring diagram. Plus, after taking some measurements it won't give me the space I require. I may have a look at the keyfob route in the meantime, it'll be cheaper than getting someone to fit a new alarm.

Not looking to replace the glovebox, I was hoping to utilise the space which the alarm module lives in. I'm planning to put my standalone ECU on the LH side of the car, don't really want to do it how Volvo has done it where the harness zigzags around the engine bay.

I won't be using a MAF, and most of the sensors will be located on the LH side of the engine bay. The only items which will be on the RH side are the wideband O2 sensor and the EBC. I could put the standalone ECU where the LH2.4 lives but that would require creating a completely new wiring harness, I have a 2.5m harness with a separate fusebox for the fuel pump, injectors, ignition and ECU already made up.

This is a red block engine, right? Does it have air-con? Also i'm guessing you'll be using a MAP sensor seeing as your doing away with the MAF? If so, is it going to be manifold or remote mounted?

It's a red block and it has Air-Con, hence the reason why I was asking those Air-con questions a few weeks ago. The MAP sensor will be located remotely, it makes it an easier install IMO, plus it keeps the sensor away from a direct source of vibration.

I forgot about your air-con questions, my idea would have been to mount the ECU where the reciever-dryer is on the bulkhead with the MAP sensor nearby.

As yours is a turbo, tbe battery is on the left so you get space above it to hang the ECU from the slam panel on a bespoke bracket.

If you hinged the bottom of the bracket and used a Dzus fastener or similar as a latch at the top, it wouldn't make any difference to changing light bulbs, just release the Dzus fastener, drop the ECU down and change your bulbs.

Handy for all other fuel related things on that side and avoids the zig-zag of the loom too.

Hi Dave,

Thought about your suggestion, but I'd rather keep the ECU inside the cabin. Looks like I'm putting it where the existing ECU is, thankfully I only have to re-build part of the pre-built wiring harness to get it to fit, sadly it's still going to zig-zag around the engine bay...
