Replacing diff oil

Mine has the drain and fill plugs as Cheech posted on the previous page of the thread :



I'm fairly sure yours will be similar, if nowt comes out, either there's no oil in there or sediment is blocking it so a bit of stiff wire (coathanger or similar) might be useful for "penetrative exploration" to see if poking the hole lets any oil out.

Like someone mentioned, it might have one of those virgin gaskets too.

If it's never been changed it'll be thin and dirty by now, you might not know how noisy the diff is until you change it as it could simply need the oil changing. Very often it's hard to hear the diff from inside the car but i'm sure it contributes to the overall noise level.
Be interesting to hear your experience Mark of the before/after noise levels in the cabin.

I'm sure it will be quieter Dave as every time I wash and hoover the car it runs miles better

Mine's a late 940 B230FK and sports the 1041 rear axle, I'd suggest yours will be the same.

The upshot of that is it doesn't have the drain bolt shown in the picture posted earlier in the thread.

Mine is a 1996 and after a quick look it does look very similar to picture

Using either my Pela 6000 or my electronic suction pump coupled with initiative and talent

TBF, I think the 'Drain plug' on your axle isn't actually intended to be used as a drain plug at all and wasn't designed that way by Volvo, the axle is intended to be 'Filled for life' IIRC, it's simply that people have found through experience that if that bolt is removed the oil leaks through it!

I'm happy to be proved wrong on that if anyone can show me a green-book or anything else published by Volvo to the contrary.
