1993 960 sunroof switch

Hi all, I have already listed in the "wants" section to see if anyone has a spare metal sunroof operating switch; its for the early type 960. Do you know if any other type of switch would fit the space and do the same job....the connections can be worked around.

I'm fairly sure the late 760 sunroof switch is the same Garth but it might be worth popping the switch out, dismantling it and cleaning the contacts inside with some fine emery paper and some aerosol contact cleaner. That fixed mine after the second one stopped working in short order!
I think the late (facelift) 740 switch is the same, if you really want to change the switch, give Mark a call at Norfolk Volvo Spares, usually seems to have a few floating around :

None listed in his ebay shop at the moment, doesn't mean he doesn't have any though! He was recommended to me by my local Volvo main dealer who are very "old skool" and justifiably proud of their own reputation.

Is that the black rocker switch on the the dash facia with a pic of the roof open on it? I must have one somewhere for a 745 that has a solid metal lid. I will have a look to see where it is!

haven't looked, but if they are like the heated seat and lekky window switches, Dave's advice is solid. Pull that sucker apart. Dont lose the little ball bearing and spring for the detent !!! I wouldn't use emery, but hey, takes all sorts. A good clean out of the ugly grease that they used, a swish-up with some contact cleaner, and then plug in and try it out...

Same contact arrangements Ash, mechanically at least. I found after trying the "gentle touch" i had to resort to emery to fettle the contacts as they were quite badly burned. Still working nearly 3 years on so must have done something right somewhere!

Thanks to all of you with advice and also to you Bob.
I have been able to fix it. As guided, I took the switch apart. It is easier if you gently lever off the rocker switch and lift it out. Underneath you will see the two little rocker tabs with tiny silver contacts on the ends. Clean them up carefully with old crocus paper. On the underside of the rocker switch itself, there is a short white plastic rod clipped in and makes the little tabs rock between the contacts on either side. Mine was quite well worn with little flats; this can be take out and cleaned up at bit.
Reassembly, place the tabs in position, you can see where little recesses are in their respective locations, and then you can gently clip the rocker switch itself back in position until it clips in.
Plug in the socket at the back and give it a try; works perfectly. I think the initial problem with my switch was the wear in the white plastic rod allowing one of the tabs to jump out of position.
Sometimes you just need the guidance from you experts to give it a go.

Great news Garth! Now you've done your apprenticeship in Volvo rocker switch repairs, all the others are pretty much the same, some simpler but all operate on the same principle.

Only ones i'm not sure on are the two stage front and rear fog light switches and the timed ones for the HRW and mirror heaters. They seem to keep going though so we'll cross that bridge if we ever need to.

Don't know what's inside that HRW/mirror switch. Thank goodness, as you say Dave , they seem to be very reliable. Nearly 30 years experience with the same switch isn't bad for a switch .... maybe I am tempting fate, but have a spare....somewhere!! There must be a lot going on in that long black box that forms the back of switch!! There has to be some form of relay/themo switching lurking in there.

I shall have to consider a little investigation into that one but my current bugbear is the f'in front speaker on both sides dropping out. I guess it must be a bad wire/contact somewhere behind the door card/loom at the hinge as to get to get the speakers back on all I have to do is gently tap the top of both the mirror control switches! I'll have to take the card off and investigate, but it's such a bore when you can just tap the top of the mirror switches!!
