Scaremongery.
Classic "what if..."

They could just as well have written:

New car with faulty brakes could have saved me but killed the Prime Minister (if it the brakes had failed and she was in front of me)

New car with faulty brakes could have saved me but killed an entire classroom of school children (if it the brakes had failed and they were in front of me)

New car with faulty brakes could have saved me but killed a cute little pony (if it the brakes had failed and it was in front of me)

You can create any "what if" scenario you like.... but it remains a "what if" if it never happened.

Looked like he managed to pull up and stop to me. May have had more break travel but the car slowed down pulled up ok. I do not think he would have risked driving with no breaks.

Not good that the car passed its inspection and quality checks though. But it may have been working ok at lower speeds or something came adrift later.

An unfortunate incident but mistakes do happen. He doesn't need to lie to his son - perhaps he should've read the manual:
Emergency brake
In an emergency, the parking brake can be
applied when the car is in motion by pulling and
holding up the control. Braking stops when the
control is released.
NOTE
An acoustic signal sounds while emergency
braking is active at high speeds.
EDIT:

Quote from the Telegraph's 'consumer champion':
You have considered taking Volvo to court and it certainly looks like you could have a personal injury case if you did. Given the apparent impact on your vulnerable son’s mental state, there could be a substantial claim.
Don't get me started...

All these stories have that extra bit of waffle to build it up, cut to the chase and save me the b*******

Also if he gets a Land Rover good luck if he doesn’t expect any faults on it straight out the factory.

The whole thing seems a bit odd to me.

If my car developed a brake fault, it wouldn’t occur to me to film a re-enactment, then call the Daily Torygraph.

That’s a pretty poor attitude. For a brand sold on safety to loose your brakes is scandelous. If the part not fitted at factory is that critical then Volvo should have undertaken a proper review and I would have expected someone to implement a check sheet or WiFi type torque wrench to ensure the prt is fitted to every car.

The 90 in question was built, approved and PDId with non functional brakes.

It’s lucky children or others were not killed when a 1.8t car does not stop. 1000 quid compensation is an insult.

Agreed - the car seemed to stop reasonably quickly in the clip, and made to look more dramatic by steering through the cones.
