Cool 2006 Volvo V70 D5 lights

Hi folks,
My V70 has developed a very strange fault, which is the most annoying ever !
Basically, the N/S headlight turns off / on / off / on etc. and looks like a lighthouse as i drive along. It can start after a few minutes or a few hours, there doesn't seem to be any rules to its behaviour. As it turn off (side light still on) i get the dash warning of "headlight failure", at that time i usually switch between "off - sidelight - on" and it will turn on again for an unspecified time before starting to flash again.
Does anyone have any ideas please, it's driving me nuts !!

I paid the main dealer on 5th Sept. to replace both dipped headlight bulbs and switch off the DRLs.
I got in the car tonight, switched the headlights on and "Headlight Bulb failure" warning.
New record. Less than 3 months for a dipped bulb and the lights not on all the time.
