Default SOS - Wanted!

I've put this in the 'wanted' section but I guess not many of you look at that so repeating it here:

Does anyone know where I can get a RH rear radius arm and bush (that's the garage description, I realise parts are sometimes referred to by different names) for a 1992 Torslanda? They've ordered one through local dealers but it is being imported, with no suggestion of delivery date, could even be weeks. The car is my only means of transport, so garage suggested maybe a good secondhand part to tide me over. This is an SOS!

I need it for MoT, they won't even let me drive the car away, say the arm is too dangerous. I've looked online but nothing promising so far. Also tried FRF Swansea, who could obtain one but with same delivery uncertainty. Any other dealers suggested? I've sent garage a link to Brookhouse, who have some suspension parts but probably not the right one I suspect.

Hey-ho, this is the first major obstacle I've met in over ten years and nearly 100,000 miles so shouldn't really complain. I'm beginning to think now might be the time to consider something newer but I like the Tors too much!

Hello Angie. It's good to see a post from you. I'm sorry you have a problem.

Can you get perhaps a fully serviceable secondhand part?

Is there a car from which the part can be borrowed?

Can you perhaps, cope while this is sorted? Borrow a car?

Buying a modern sardine can might be incurring rather more problems ....

Take care.

Stephen

I suspect what they mean is this https://www.classicswede.co.uk/200_s..._19239803.aspx

They can rot out and need replacing, closest thing to a radius arm

That was my thought too. Although the arms can get very rusty I have never actually seen one on the point of collapse, but obviously potentially that could be very dangerous.
The large bush is unfortunately a tricky fitting in the axle, so if their prohibition applies to the bush as well you need to obtain a replacement and have it fitted at the garage. From experience a competely disintegrated bush alone would not make a car unsafe to drive home, just feel perhaps a bit odd at the rear.

And. MOT failure notices have changed. In my opinion the new versions are not a model of clarity. I suspect various testers are interpreting them differently from each other.

This would seem to be the solution: complete with bush, in stock and not too expensive. Good post classicswede.

Does this post solve the issue OP?

That's the small front bush. Which one has the MOT tester said is unsafe - the small bush or the large one on the axle casing which the trailing arm bolts to?

Such a lot of helpful advice from you all, thank you. As I mentioned, parts often are referred by different names, and by different mechanics, so the part which some of you have suggested might well be what's needed. John, the mechanic, mentioned getting a bush as well, and again some of you have mentioned them.

The problem is they close all weekend so I won't be able to ask until Monday. I did send him a link to Brookhouse yesterday but it was latish so haven't had a reply. The car has needed a lot of welding, once they inspected closely they found more rust than originally anticipated (not looking forward to the bill!) so I suppose it's not surprising that some other bits submit to the metal worm.

They are an excellent garage in many respects, and John does like working on classic cars - he has a Triumph 1500 and a Moggie saloon at present - but they do tend to go for the easy option where parts are concerned. Just contacted main dealers in Truro who ordered direct from Volvo. I wish I'd suggested trying here first but I hadn't expected quite such a long wait, though of course I should have done.

I'll have a word with John on Monday and go from there.

Once again, thanks for going to the trouble of replying, all of you, this really is such a helpful forum.
