480 Turbo - More Oomphh
A friend of mine has just picked up a low mileage 480 Turbo. Generally it's in good condition but its heading off for some paintwork & repairs in the usual places.
He's asking if there any upgrades available to get a bit more oomphh out of the 1.7 Turbo motor? Thanks

Hi, the first things than u can do are a ecu mod First is Robou Mod, that tune or modify, will give u around 1 Bar Peak boost and the car become a lot faster u will go around 160/170 Cv in base of condition of the car Second options is Efi Parts Mod, this give you the chance to use a manual boost controller and decide how much pressure u want. With this mod there is a thing to say, max boost u can handle is 1 Bar, why this? Cause 480 have a small injectors, and need more bigger for go to 1.2-1.3 Bar than bigger injectors. 480 Injectors are Hight impendence like 16.9 ohm if i remember correctly. Other mods are use efi parts ecu mods and put T25/t28 turbo coming out from a saab or a 180Z, some people use T25 of Escort Cosworth with 440 injectors and give a lot of power, around 220 Cv with bigger intercooler jnjectors and turbos Engine can handle around 230/240 Cv without opend the block . For more mods or info u can search on volvo480 club forum or on google typing B18FT engine tuning or similar. i hope to have help you Last edited by DEATH; Aug 19th, 2019 at 11:18. |

Had a couple of 480turbo's way back when - probably a bodge, but I used a bleedvalve in the turbo to wastegate pipe which was very effective - no idea how much boost it made, but the boost gauge was just about at the red, any more and it started misfiring. Car was still ultra-reliable, I was covering 35-40k a year back then (now 4-5k a year)
Made a significant improvement in the driveability of the car. How I miss my (3) 480's - missus hates them :-( |

This 120 bhp engine is already mapped to 150 bhp but not fully utilised, you don't need any remapping .. it's a case of raising the boost to just below the safety cut off point of 12.5 psi ... you will need some decent koni front suspension dampers to stop the car raising its front end under the new acceleration ... ( about 7 seconds to 60 mph )
