I’m no expert, but I don’t think this is very original for a 240 GL, it looks like it has had lots of (nice) bling bits fitted over the years. I can’t help but like it in the same way that I do the RB. I like all those gauges, the suspension looks smart and it has (of course) Virgo wheels.

It is at £3,000 at the moment with 5 days to go. It won’t be an historic car for another 8 years, but I like it and it would be nice to see it make £4,000 - although I think that would be a lot for a 32 year old.

I’ll keep an eye on it :-)
Well that was a quick flip!

Same car as a couple of weeks back!

Well spotted Dave! I don’t know whether the new owner is a dealer, or just a chap after a fast buck. The new advert is a bit more interesting, but otherwise the car is unchanged, so it will be interesting to see whether it makes significantly more. It seems a lot of effort to make a few hundred quid after expenses.

PS. I just had a thought - perhaps the £3,000 opening bid was a shrill (spelling?) one?

Hmmmm, i suspect the current owner is a dealer Alan and is punting it out and also getting shill bids from family members in various parts of the country.

Seen it happen before and in fact one car i bought the seller let it slip the previous sale (too far away for me) was by his cousin. Took me a while to put 2 and 2 together to realise it but since then i've seen a fair few listings on ebay that have followed a pattern of a car being shunted round the country seemingly sold by one seller to the next.

Might be right, might be wrong but it certainly fits the pattern i've seen before!

You may well be right Dave, I looked at the seller's profile and can see he has sold a few cars previously (not many, mostly machine tool parts, so perhaps that is his main business?).

The shill bidding piece? I think that is a possibility - I get a bit suspicious if bidders have low eBay profile scores (perhaps recently created accounts of convenience). We'll see how this one goes.

I'm not convinced there is much margin in this motor. It seems to be a fairly genuine car (in a sort of RB way) that was bought for £2,900 a week or so ago. The chap has done nothing to it, and has now trying to sell it via exactly the same means (eBay) for enough to make it worthwhile. One would have thought the pool of bidders for a car like this would be limited (people rather like us) and so they would have bought it for £3,000 at the first offering if they had wanted it that much. Smell a bit fishy?

Alan

Smells very fishy Alan! Hence my thoughts about it being the same seller and he's just shipped it off to a different family member to be sold - quite possibly one of his shill bid group and he will now take their place to drive the price up.

However as you pointed out, if genuine buyers wanted it for £3k they would have put their bids in and paid up and looked big come auction end. Reminds me very much of the £10k Rover 820 Si fastback that was listed several times by the same seller and each time gradually the bids got up near the £10k mark (final bid price was £9995 so call me a liar for the sake of a fiver! ) but it was always relisted a few days later.

On the other hand it gave a friend the leverage he needed to get an Agreed Value of £10k on his 820 Si that in all honesty is even nicer than the one on the listing.

I wonder how many more times this one will be listed?

A bit tricky to read in that format but one of the bidders first time round has a feedback score of 575. The current seller has a feedback score of 575 as well! I wonder............

Will be interesting to see if other feedback scores are "duplicated" in this second auction!

***EDIT*** If it was a genuine sale first time round then it would seem the current seller with 575 feedback genuinely bought it but there are several similarities in the listing and the added "bereavement sale" to the previous seller which tends to prevent people digging too deeply.

My gut feeling is it's being punted around until they get the price they want.

Good analysis Dave,

Wokingham to Charlton isn't far...

Thanks Alan, depends which Charlton - there's one in London, another in Wiltshire and i believe another "oop norf" somewhere.
Most likely is the London one though, will be intersting to see how the bidding goes...........

It is the SE London one Dave (shows up on the iPad version of eBay). Maybe you are right -perhaps someone's brother or uncle lives in Wokingham - not far around the M25 :-). It would seem a bit odd that someone might have bought the car in good faith at £2,900 on 25 February and a fortnight later is trying to flip it for a worthwhile profit. Only two likely scenarios come to (my) mind:

1. As you suggest, it is being moved around, plus a bit of shill bidding, to get a high enough price. Maybe someone's uncle or grandad passed away and left the car...

2. Someone bought it on 25 Feb and has found a significant problem with it (the normal rusty underneath stuff) and is trying to unload it before anyone notices.

I don't know... but I'll watch the auction and report at the end (bidding at £3,200 - or maybe not...).

Certainly a strange one Alan, will be surprised if we are able to work out a definite outcome either way though unless it goes up for sale a third time in another different area.
