They had a Mitsubishi engine in that was prone to getting coked up.

Yes, and the T4 is a 2 litre.
There were 3 different 1.8 litre engines, with different CCs. The 2 under 1800 CC had reverse up & left, as far as I know. The GDI had reverse back and right. The OP said he's looking at a 1.8 petrol, not a T4. See here for more info: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=26177 |

why not gdi?. i wouldnt change mine for any thing despite a few niggles it does 30K a year at 45mpg and is reasonably powerful. its got 155K on the clock and as far as i'm aware has never been fully stripped down i just keep the throttle body clean and use SI-1 injector cleaner every now and then to keep the injectors clean, i just live with the rough idle.

How do you tell if it’s a GDI, simple...
Start it up, it idles smoothly, doesn’t stall or misfire it’s not a GDI!!! |

Don't take that the wrong way. Not having a pop at your car or even GDi's in general but it makes sense for a buyer to avoid engines with known problems especially if he/she is not doing a lot of miles.

all fair points however doing a quick calc based on gdi doing 45mpg and regular 1.8 doing 35mpg i've used almost 800 litres less fuel this year, which more than makes up for any potential probs of which there havent been any. obviously there wouldn't be as much difference if the milage was smaller. another bigup for the gdi (cos i feel some negative vibes coming), no HT leads to change, spark plugs last for 100K, still not convinced oh well atleast there cheap for the rest us.
