Good fuel, serviced at correct intervals and a good fast run is all the Gdi's need. Wouldn't swap mine its done 96000 miles I've had it 5 years never missed a beat runs like a dream.

My girlfriend wanted a v40 , we purchased a 2002 gdi with 105k and fsh . 8k later im impressed with 35mpg around town and 45 on the motorway. Performance is ok to ,I looked at gdi,s and the diesel and think the gdi is far better to drive.

Before I bought my T4 last month I looked at a cracking little 1.8 Gdi and I loved it. It drove really weel, felt good to drive and all the rest. After doing a lot of research on this very site I instantly dismissed the GDi.
The reason? Well I only drive about 5 minutes to work and back each day. Its a pathetic journey for a car and most of it is in traffic. It was mentioned so many times on this site by GDi owners and non Gdi owners that the engine just was not made with our fuel in mind which causes the coking. Erratic idling is also a big problem because of the crud going around the system. So my final word on this would be, If you drive a decent amount of miles, look after your car and keep on top of the oil and what not, then you will have a cracking time with the GDi. BUT, if you are like me and you only drive short distances, its probably not the engine you want. I dont think I'm being unfair by saying that am I?

I bought mine (GDi) before I was aware of the whole issue with these engines and was lucky enough to get the non Volvo dealer who sold me the car to cough up for a decoke. (by a volvo dealer) I ended up paying out to have new injectors.
What put me off another Volvo for life was the attitude that "well, it's not Volvo's fault, it's a Mitsubushi engine" Who bloody decided to fit that engine? The customer? The engine's so unsuitable for uk town driving that they shouldn't have used it. It wasn't designed for long runs - that's what the solution is over here. It was fine in Japan because of the fuel. And I gather that the same engine fitted to Mitsubishis here is better because they use different fuel injectors. I do a 5 min journey to work but now take the car for a burn up the motorway once a week and run it on Shell premium fuel. The tick-over's ok now. Although my car is pretty good now (maybe as good as new) I'd recomend avoiding them unless you do the miles suggested above. I was sooo lucky to get the decoke at somebody else's expense! |
