I fitted a Varta battery 3 years back I got the largest one that would fit , having a larger reserve in my opinion it's in advantage.

Found the photo of the old Volvo battery (right hand one ) next to some other old batteries from sprinter vans and they do look the same case just different handles .

The H3 Varta is an 019 which is what Varta recommend for the V70 (P2 D5 anyway), either that or the blue.

Lucas are owned by TRW but don't make their own batteries.
They're made for them using the Lucas branding under licence. Numax are the current maker of Lucas batteries so that casing may be a generic design used by several manufacturers.

(Btw, I realise the 019 is 190 high and the yuasa is 175mm high, how big is the volvo one? It looks 019 size (190mm) too)
They probably are all owned by each other !

Anyway I have used a Yuasa car battery for the last 4 years and they are excellent , I bought a second one for my solar garden lights .

Well that casing of the Lucas and Volvo is Identical to the Numax. It may be a generic case, but only seen those 3 so far with that specific case...
It not impossible Numax make the volvo batts, though why theyd make something with a higher performance level than their own, or rather why they'd not make their own better, is a mystery.
The performance stats of the volvo batt match the Varta blue. Maybe Varta shovel the blue internals into a generic shell, but afaik they make their own cases in-house, so why buy in? Could be tooling costs I guess. This would make the most sense (except for the failure rate/pattern of volvo batts which is out of kilter with Varta and more like Exide)...
We may never know! (But ill probably dig some more yet)

Clan, I think the whole world is probably owned by 3 people when all said and done!

It's because volvo tell them to , just like every other volvo part in the last 40+ years , volvo do not buy stuff of shelves .. Every single part has a detailed specification sheet as to how it should be made .

Volvo's battery failure rate isn't high … There have been a few on the newer cars but that is probably due to the battery being flat for what ever reason , just leaving it flat for a day and night on a modern battery is a one way ticket to eventual failure .

But if Numax had the reliable technology to make that battery, they would make their own better.
And whilst Volvo do spec some items such as brake pads to their own proprietary requirements and legal restrictions, things like batteries and filters are simply supplied to pretty much all manufacturers including volvo, porsche, mercedes and the like by appropriate spec to suit the application, from the component manufacturers repertoire. The relevant component manufacturer will be either selected by quality or tender. This has however been covered recently on a thread about filters, where, as an example, CheshireD5 confirmed that the Mahle or Mann (I forget which) filter and the volvo filter of same manufacture were the identical exact same component.

I actually got the Bosch one cheaper so that's why I went with it rather than Varta.

I've come across variations on that case design from quite a few brands over the years.
A couple of random examples....

Tomorrow I'll be receiving a new battery for my '05 D5 XC70.

A Hankook MF60038

Bought it from Batterymegastore - Ŗ69.93

850CC - 100Ah.

30 months ago I bought the same battery for the V70 and have nothing but good to say about it. I reconditioned it 6 months ago using my CTEK charger.

The V70 has done 32K with that battery.

You turn the key on the V70 and the D5 starts instantly, even at -2ēC like this morning - no preheat necessary.
