v70 Lumbar Support Fix
Got a problem where the Lumbar Support adjustment knob just unscrews instead of adjusting the seat.
Number 4 in the above diagram. Am I being a knob and missing something obvious here? Car is a 2002 v70 Last edited by BlueRubber; Jan 20th, 2019 at 21:46. Reason: add details |

The cable inside may have snapped. The center cap pops up, then inside you have a plastic bolt to undo. Once the knob is out, need to peel up the skin about half way. Its attached under the seat with 4 circlips good to twist and bend open with a long nose pliers. I did not replace these. Then underneath the skin has also other similar circlips securing it. These are great at piercing fingers and very sharp btw
May need to peel up until exposing the two cables. Id do this first at the breakers to get the cables. Hint: we have two seat models, the round front bottom and the square bottom. The square one is the higher end and the lumbar mechanism has more travel (extra adjustment) so may grab the cables and attached knob piece from one of these

Thank you oragex, you sure are a wealth of Volvo information!
I would like to replace the drivers seat as some of the padding has collapsed making it a bit uncomfortable*. And as the lumbar fix sounds like quite an involved bit of work might as well just wait until I get a another seat. Also I assume your description is based on having leather seats? As mine are cloth. * a temporary work around for this is to put a heated seat pad on the seat, seems comfortable enough with that. |

Good point about the seat material, I'm not aware if it is different.. I talk a little about the leather seats here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOhUYIG6Qv4
The easier is to replace the whole foam/cover part, the bottom one should be doable but the hard part is attaching the cushion spring back on the frame This is my swap (I recommend it on 2001-2003) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGtD-skiJcc and they way I attached the foam spring back to the frame https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLRsCe-HeXQ

Thank you oragex; but that looks a bit too difficult for my limited skills.
However I might still replace my drivers seat, do you know if the s80 seat is better than the v70 one? |
