Default DIY door handle clip removing tool

Here's something that may be of use to someone.

While stripping my Amazon for restoration I came up against the beastly job of removing the door handles. This was not made easier by the fact that I had never tackled door handle (omega) clips before. After a lot of sweating and cursing I eventually freed one clip using 2 screwdrivers.

This done, I could see how they worked so I made a tool from 1.25mm steel sheet with a hook on the end to catch one of the tails of the clip and a cutout to clear the handle boss. The pictures show the tool and its relative position to the omega clip and the door handle. In use it is important to press the spring loaded plastic trim in to expose the clip while putting no pressure on the door handle / window winder. Any force on the handle will trap the clip making it impossible to remove!

I don't know if there are tools commonly available for this job but this has worked a treat for me and was knocked up from a bit of scrap.

The Volvo special tool looks very similar. Snap-on pick tool works well too.

If you've nothing else handy, a piece of cloth pulled the right way across the clip will pick up one of the ends and pull it out. With luck it'll also hang on to it rather than have it ping off into oblivion.

Not my invention but noted from another Volvo forum. I think the guy used one of his socks!

I think half of the space debris orbiting earth is made up of Volvo omega clips. Nasa could learn a thing or two about propulsion and trajectories from those little blighters.

Don't remove clip over gravel!

ps I got one off with a curved pick. It took forever. For some reason the rag trick did not work for me. Probably too impatient?

Hahahah -brilliant...

I would not be surprised if these clips are one of he best selling items at Brookhouse, VP etc etc

I've had my door trims on and off three or four times now and im getting pretty good at it, none the less, I decided the last time that the the handles and clips are being locked away until everything else is finished.... Definately finished !

My advice - wear saftey glasses !
