Default How to reset engine system service required?

Hi all, I have a 2012 XC90 D5. It’s been running great (and still is) but the “Engine system service required” popped up a few weeks ago. Using the T1 button near speedo I’ve pulled a 042 code. Apparently this is very generic. The car is running as good as ever so I’ve been trying to clear the message to see if it comes back on (or not!).
I tried a few different combos such as key in ignition 1 (holding the T1 button), turning key to position 2, triangle flashes and release, then repress etc. No joy.
So I bought a code reader off eBay for £10. Couldn’t find any codes and couldn’t reset engine system service required message.
I then disconnected negative terminal on the battery and turned the lights on for 5min to drain any excess power. No joy.
Fourthly I removed ECM fuses for 15 min in engine bay. If I remember right it was #12 and #19. The light remains.
Anyone got more ideas of how to clear it?
Thanks,
John
