XC90 Cambelt/Timing & Auxillary belt change intervals
Hi
I have a 57 plate D5 with 123,000 miles Service Book has it down for a cambelt change every 6 years/108,000 miles. Cambelt was changed 6 years ago at 65,000 miles. My local Volvo Dealership now says that Volvo has since reviewed service intervals and that the old service book is now obsolete. On their new system the recommendation (given my low mileage) is that the cambelt should have a 10 year replacement cycle. On one hand I'm pleased that I can defer the extra £650 service cost for 4 years, but on the other I have a concern if the belt goes then so will my (old) pride and joy. Has anyone else heard similar from their workshops please? Thanks |

I do not know what year a "57 plate" is but my MY2009 XC90 D5 diesel had it's first timing belt and aux belt and tensioner change at 10 years of age.
All preemptive, as everything was in good condition.

The interval for your engine/model year was always 10 years or 108k miles. Volvo dealers and the Volvo "on line service booking" tries it on at 6 years as they argue the average car does 18k miles per year which equates to 6 years ... no allowance for cars doing less than 18k per year...... Very disappointing stance ... I actually posted about this many years ago when my dealer "tried it on" .... when called out on it they just said woops you are correct its 10 years or 108k miles ......
and they wonder why dealers get a bad reputation.

I replaced mine at 93,000 and I am pleased to say there was not a single crack that I could see anywhere - the belt was in perfect condition. However, the car was only 5 years old. I am not sure a 10 year old belt will be in such good condition so I advise you to budget for its replacement within a year or so; as you say would be a shame to lose a good workhorse for the sake of a few hundred pounds. At the very minimum get the belt eyeballed at the next service but this is not full proof.
FYI I replaced the belt on my son's Fiesta at 92,000 when we got it (a gift from a relative), the car was over 14 years old and was shocked at the cracks I could see when I folded the belt. It was a supposed to be replaced at around 100k but it had passed its age limit of 10 years. The quality of the Volvo belt is high and as I say mine was perfect when I removed it so yours could well last to 10 years if driven gently but I personally would not risk it. I replaced mine on a 2008 183 bhp Euro 4 D5 @ 11 years and 160k km last year and both the belt and the timing idler & tensioner bearings were in perfect condition. Did it without removing the crank, which was tricky, but worked fine (need to cut the old belt off). I believe the Euro 3 has exactly the same setup.
It's quite easy to inspect the belt by undoing the timing cover slightly, but appearance only counts so much. Damien |

2005 xc90 awd d5 belt change help
Looking to change drive belt and auxiliary belt, any pictures and step by step would be helpful thanks guys
