S40 T4 Brake Mystery !?
Hi all at my wits end now trying to figure out whats goin on with the front brakes on the T4, it started to squeal a few days ago so i got the car up got the pads out and they were fine, half life left on them ? anyway put new pads in and for a mile or 2 they were fine, then the squeak came back, i then took the car to my friend whos a mechanic and he said they need copper grease on them and the edges of the disc skimming which he did, anyway again 2 miles down the road the squeals back, and now the the pads are starting to put grooves round the disc !?? the noise is like the brake pads have completely gone but this is not the case ??
Any help is much appreciated as its doing mine and my gf's nut in !! PS The discs were new not that long ago ! Last edited by tinathet4; Aug 9th, 2011 at 18:54. |

What brand of disc's and pads did you put in? I think last time I had to fit blue print ones and they are noisy compared to others I've had. The chances are they are hard compounds as it were which give more squeak. Was the wear rates on the pads you removed even?

hi, the pads that came off were genuine Volvo pads, no wear mark on either ?? but they were worn evenly, the new pads ive put in are only cheap ones as i wanted to see if it was the original pads that was making the squeal, the discs im not sure of i presume there genuine volvo items as the owner before us only used the best ! im an ex ATS techincian and in my 2 years of doing brakes i never had this problem before, even my mechanic ( who does porsches etc ) is baffled !!

......the only way your new pads can put a groove around the disc is if hard dirt get`s between them or the pads are the wrong type for the car and maybe could be fade free ones with the pieces of metal within the pad material these grip the disc better but also put grooves around the disc because of there make-up nature....you say you are experienced in these things but did you remember to thoroughly clean the caliper of old compacted hard brake pad material deposited on the caliper around by the disc pads mounting points....the colour of this will mimic the colour of the caliper as the caliper will have the same dust on it but he hard and sometimes very thick crap has to be got rid of otherwise when running again with new pads the crap can fall off and be trapped when you brake it also causes squeal......also if your friend mechanic had to file off the disc edges it is probably at the point where the discs are too thin when braking this will set up a resonance which is then heard as a squeal the thickness of the disc acts as a dampener which will absorb any squeal......the disc are easy fitted and you can use cheap ones by doing just the front two and with pads with the noise absorbing material on the back of them as well.......when you have a problem with brakes it is best not to cut corners as the materials are really cheap to what they used to be years ago and also it is peace of mind......hope this helps?..

Hi when my friend the mechanic checked the brakes he said there was built up brake dust but bar that everythin ok, he did suggest new discs but there only 12 months old surely they would not need replacing so soon, the car has not done alot of miles since they were put on ??

sadly if they were "cheap" disks they may well be worn out after 12months
the std volvo ones do cost a bit more, but 80k miles with ease cheap £20 ebay ones,,,12 months /??

Got a seized caliper? Seized slider? Sounds like the pads are seizing because of something, are they carriers definately clean and the pads able to move freely? Hope this helps. Marc
