Angry Remapping : A Cautionary Tale :-(

So,
Not wanting to fork out 7 to 800 on a Polestar for my 2010 V70 Twin Turbo I went to a local firm in Derby DRS, now these guys have mapped stuff for me before Navara's, Fords etc but all previous maps have been Via ODB II port, not (NOT) ECM removal.

So the car goes in and 4hrs later I receive a call the ECM can't be read/remapped and they won't charge me for the time. They had been in touch with there equipment supplier 'and tried a few things' but no joy.

I collected the car drove it home no problem, 2 hours later went to fetch the kids and the car won't crank and I get every service message imaginable (even one for the coolest system), So I drop the battery of for 20 mins and try again, no joy. To cut along sad story short got a mate (Qualified Auto Electrician) and his Vida/Dice will talk to all the systems bar the ECM.

I then get the car recovered down to the local Dealers and find that the ECM has a damaged Faulty board, 'Wonder how that happened????'.

DRS say the car was fine as it drove away from there site and the board was faulty beforehand as they couldn't read it

Im now waiting for a new ECM to be shipped from Sweden and fitted for £1100, So in hindsight the Polestar £800 would have been a bargain.

My advise if remapping firms want to remove the ECM for the remap DONT and go down the main dealer route...

.

Have you checked all the ECM interface pins for damage/dirt ?

Maybe there's a wiring issue that prevents full connection to the ECM, but is causing some sort of short circuit, or something that's confusing the ECM.

I would check all this anyway before fitting a new ECM, although if Volvo are doing this, I'd very much hope they run a thorough diagnostic of all the wiring leading to the ECM interface. Good luck

Send them the bill and head to court if they don't cough up and I agree if your going for a remap walk away if they want to open the ecu, There are plenty of quality companies out there that can remap via the OBD

Yeah checked the pins and connections, reseated it twice and its a no go. Volvo actually said they needed to check some more wiring before they confirmed the problem, so fingers crossed

Interesting story

FYI my remap done in 2009 cost the equivalent of 2300 GBP back then, and was a Heico remap (similar to a Polestar these days)
