Agree with this, I thought my box was ready for the scrap yard. After ATF-U oil changes and the gearbox software update available, Ive forgotten about it, and its now over 10,000 miles later.

Default t6 auto gearbox is crap

Will never buy another automatic volvo. Had one in my t6 that failed.

A major design flaw matching a 4 speed GM box to a 250 bhp engine!

Now driving a MANUAL t5

Glad to here that buddy. I'll be swapping out another ~6 litres in mine later this year. My oil is fairly clean now, but doing it again can only be good for it.

Cheers

Hello all

Thanks for the replies, firstly it is an old girl (2003) with about 80K on the clock, not sure when (if !) the ATF was last changed, and the gearbox is the standard one - ie not geartronic.

I am not that mechanically minded so is changing the ATF (and fitting the B4 thing ) best done by a garage ?

Still don't know what this B4 cover is for ?

Thanks

JTR

PS.and, what is this software upgrade ? how do I know if I need one ?

Depending on your car specific symptoms, it's pretty much all explained here. It talks about everything, software flash, servo cover, solenoids, etc.

As you may see, it really takes an analysis to understand your specific situation.

If you can change the engine oil John, you can change the ATF. It really is that simple, and will save you £££'s doing it yourself.

Yes the gearbox oil change is as simple as engine oil change. Just dont over fill, or spill the ghastly stuff in the car like the dumbo DDN did.

One tip, measure the drained fluid really well, so you can put back the same amount. easier than having to measure the fluid level on the dipstick

Even if your car is currently shifting and working fine, best to change the transmission fluid. Best to change it as a first port of call for any faults too!

It's very simple to do, although you need to do it in two 'halves'; the drain plug only lets out half the fluid. So you change half then change it again later (and possibly a third time after that). I've done the first change just now, I'll be doing the second one of these days.

If you can't find a decent how-to with photos then I'll be glad to photograph what I do and write it up for you. Oh and the new ATF-U fluid can be had for under £50 for 8 litres on ebay. No reason to not change it now!
