volvo C30 diesel engine query

I have just got a Volvo c30 16D it was new in May and I am the second owner it had done 620 miles when I got it ,my query is why does the cooling fan come on so early-this evening I did three miles in cool weather in light traffic at mixed speeds nothing excessive I parked the car on the drive and the cooling fan was running,and the temperature guage was on normal

As the radiator pack also contains the condensor for the air conditioning, the fan will run intermitently if the A/C is switched on.

When my S60 had an air lock, AA chap asked me to switch off A/C so the fan wouldn't kick and he could bleed the system properly. Car was sat idling for at least 30 minutes on a summer's evening and the fan never kicked in; the moment I switched the A/C back on the fan spun up.

My wife's S40 2.0D does this as well and did so yesterday afternoon on the way to the pub. ABout 2 miles, cool outside etc. A/C running (of course).

Spoek to Volvo when the car went in for its 3 month checkup and was told no problems, this is normal etc.

I have bought a V50 1.6D last month and also my cooling fan sometimes starts after short trips... I've been to the dealer for a check, but he said that no error results in the diagnostic system
