So after finishing all the work on the 1800 (New interior, overdrive switch, fixing the non winding window) and putting it through its successful mot yesterday I took it out on a fault free 60 mile drive last night, this morning I was going to do an oil change, so fired car up in garage to get oil warmed up and heard a noise that sounded like a backfire through the carb, i blipped the throttle a couple of times and didn't make noise again, so sat in car for a few mins whist the water needle just moved off the very bottom position, then shut it down, and went undr car to drain oil from sump .... what I saw under the car was a bl**dy big pool of oil ......... puzzled as to what had happened as the sump bolt was still tight and from undervtge car it looked like the oil was coming from the filter area, so clambered out and saw the oil filter had split and the oil was coming from there, I presume the pop that I thought was the carb was the oil filter popping !!. I drained the sump and there was about a quarter of the oil left in it !!! Removed filter (volvo one) which is a year old and had split, put New filter on refilled oil and all seems ok pressure fine etc ..... but just wondered whether anyone else had witnessed this phenomena, as I never have before !!! Fingers crossed engine seems ok.

I'm thinking about oil pressure relief valves but will need to look it up.
I had a filter spraying oil out of a rust hole once, but that was a car that had sitting in the yard for 15 years.....

I think you'll have to put it down to bad luck. That's balanced by the good luck that it didn't happen when you were out on a trip, and you were at a point where you were going to change the oil. Yes you have made a mess but it's cost you nothing.
Would be interesting to see a picture of the filter showing where the split occurred. In the old days Volvo would likely have given you an apology and a new filter. Simon at Brookhouse might be equally generous if you bought it there and you send him the split one. |

Hi it was a Volvo filter 1 year old, unfortunately I can't post pic of it as I took it to the tip along with the 2 old duvet covers I used to soak the oil slick off the floor up with. Guess I just put it down to bad luck!!
