Help - bought an XC90 clanger!
Hi,
I purchased a Volvo XC90 from auction a little over a year ago which the next morning I found was undrivable due to a major transmission fault - needs a new gearbox. I've been battling with the auction house since then but just noticed that in the catalogue it states that it is an Volvo XC90 2.4 D 163 SE G/T but having just looked on the V5 it says its a Volvo XC90 D SE AWD AUTO. Are they the exact same vehicle? The reg is HW05 CVF Thanks in advance. |

I would imagine that G= Geartronic=auto
T=Turbo So I would say that it is just a different way of discribing the same thing. |

Volvo started to release the ‘D5’ in different power forms and euro compliance’s at that time. It was always called a ‘D5’ then the earlier euro 3 became 163 2.4D whilst the newer euro 4 was D5.
Or.... a variation on what I said above, so no, possibly not the same thing but in reality yes they are. The old AW55 auto you will have is not known as been a problematic box. What are the symptoms? |

These are both the interpretation of the same car. Unfortunately both are wrong in Volvo speech. It should be:
Volvo XC90 D5 SE AWD Neither the transmission type, nor the mentioning of a turbo (all XC90 are turbos) or the bhp are part of the model. So unfortunately for you, yes, it's the same car.

The euro 3 with grey cover was 2.4D 163 and the Euro 4 was D5. If this is the case, and I am pretty sure it is then they are in fact different vehicles. |

I was, because I own exactly that...was, because after your post I took a look at wikipedia, where it states exactly what you are saying.
Interestingly enough my price list for 2005 says something else. There is only noted the D5 with the 163bhp. But I pulled the 2006 price list, and you're totally right! For MY 2006 there are two possible namings (and models), so that makes the following: MY 2003 to MY 2005: XC90 D5 AWD (163bhp/automatic and manual transmission) MY 2006 (until October 2005): XC90 2.4D AWD (163bhp/only automatic transmission) and XC90 D5 AWD (185bhp/only manual transmission) MY 2006 (from October 2005 on): XC90 D5 AWD (185bhp/automatic and manual transmission) After that it was only D5 AWD, even with the 200bhp with MY 2011. Sorry and thanks for noticing! EDIT: here is the link to the MY2006 price list, page 10 (I only found it in german): http://box.motorline.cc/autowelt/pdf..._xc90_2006.pdf

To the original poster, the old 163 2.4D is well understressed and the AW-55 box is very reliable. What are the symptoms of the box? |

It seems that it is a Xc90 D Se Awd Auto 163bhp so I stick by my original opinion that it is the same car described differently. |
