Changed fuel filter and got p0087
I've replaced my dirty fuel filter with new one and now I keep getting p0087: Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low
I've replaced it with Mahle filter, which should be OE? I ended up replacing only large gasket ring with the filter. It didn't came with the smaller gasket for diesel intake. After replacing it I didn't have any troubles except for first start-up when it wouldn't start, but that was because there wasn't enough diesel in the filter cup. After that, I've already done 400 km and there aren't any noticeable problems. I've also had a little bit hard time putting the plastic filter cap on, but eventually it came on. What I've noticed is that I get the p0087 over the night, when car and engine gets cold. If I delete the code in the evening when engine is warm/hot, I won't get the code back after few start-ups. Does anyone have any idea what actually could go/be wrong? car: s60 2004, D5244T2 (with 404.000 km) filter: cartridge insert type (not cylinder) |

Are you saying that there is no small O ring currently fitted to your new filter ?
The filter should have had the large O ring for the plastic housing and a small O ring for the spigot on top of the filter ( unless it came prefitted ) If there was no small O ring I would have at least swapped the one from the old filter onto the new one. If there is no small O ring on your new filter at present, I would say this is the root cause of your issue as the system will constantly be losing pressure.

It is weird that there wasn't any before that on the old one (previous mechanic also didn't put it on) and I haven't had any problems and even the new filter came without it.
Actually I'll go in the store today to somehow get the smaller one and fit it on. Is it safe to take the new one out and leave the large gasket on? Or should I also replace this one also after taking the filter cap off? Well, I think this is the most logical explanation as you proposed, so I'll double check again (in the box and on the old filter) and try to somehow put it on. Will come back with the results and thank you for now. Last edited by urban60; May 25th, 2018 at 08:32. |

If you look at this link for a D5 Fuel filter you will see what should have been present even though it is a different make filter.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BFF8037-B...AAAOSwGJlZG8Cj In addition here is a photo of a Mahle filter and you can clearly see the O ring in place ( PREFITTED). Are you sure your new one didn't have it already on? In any case you can certainly remove the new filter and check for certain . The large O ring on the filter housing should be absolutely fine to reuse, leave it in place and don't disturb it. Good liuck and hope you get it sorted quickly. This sounds like something simple has been overlooked.

Well, like I said. I will double check it. Can't tell you for sure.
How about if it is prefitted? Then something else has to bother it... Will look at it today in the evening and will come back with the results. |

I've checked the filter again, and there was little O-ring pre-fitted. I'm still getting p0087 when engine is cold. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?
