V50 Engine 2.0D : newbie with a problem

firstly
i would like to say hello to everyone, i am please to be a member of the forum,
basicaly i found it looking for answers on google to my problem, which is my v50 2.0D will not start, has the engine managment light on and i am told it my well be the DPF has failed volvo want £1000+ and i was wondering if i can do it myself i have found the part for £204 can it be done at home is my question?

Is it simply that you have air in the clear pipe going from filter to injection pump? it can only be bled with an external hand priming squeeze bulb tool ... The DPF wont stop it firing up .....
